"We combine a diverse wide range of musical genres, from the indigenous music of Mexican cultures and influences from Los Angeles chicano rock."
Yankee Azteca originated in 2003 in South Central Los Angeles. Jose Chitica (vocalist) and brother Pedro (guitarist/vocalist) would perform acoustic sets at a cafe in Sylmar, CA for free cups of coffee. Steven Bejarano joined shortly after to help out on bass with Maurice Durham (drums) and Arturo Rodriguez (guitar).
When the pandemic lockdown hit in 2020 members of the band would get together weekly via online Zoom meetings. This blossomed into a surge of inspiration and the band started writing music in a lockout in Whittier, CA. In a true punk rock DIY fashion the band wrote, recorded, and produced a full-length album themselves entitled “Veinte Veinte”, due to come out this year. The first single from the album is “No Puedo Respirar” a song inspired by the George Floyd protests.
