​Due to severe vision loss, Wayne retired as a construction executive in 2004. Early retirement left Wayne without future goals and a detailed plan for his future. Having a lifelong passion for volunteering he decided that in retirement community volunteering would be his next new career.

Moving forward in this new career, he served as a volunteer for several organizations in Orange County California, including Braille Institute of America as a support group facilitator, computer teacher, rights and resources teacher and a communication class teacher . For Blind Children’s Learning Center he brought much needed specialized technology to classrooms for children with visual impairments and other disabilities. He also served as a Technology Specialist for the Southern California College of Optometry.

Wayne has also volunteered for several national organizations. He is a past President and Vice President of the Orange County Chapter for the Foundation Fighting Blindness and the past Vice President for the Foundation for the Preservation of Sight. He founded the Low Vision Council serving as Director for many years.

Wayne also mentored over 30 young people during this period . The mentoring of others reinforced the meaning of life for Wayne and was the prelude for a new life and career as nationally known motivational speaker, university director, assistant professor and thought leader in technology.

In 2010, as a volunteer, he accepted a position as an adjunct assistant professor for the Southern California College of Optometry where he continues to lecture today. Leaving retirement in 2015, Wayne accepted a full time position as the Director of Community Relations, Assistant Professor – Technologist for MBKU. Wayne also manages the Kathryn T. McCarty Adaptive Technology Center for the university and is the Curator of Art for the Sharing Visions International Art Exhibit.

Wayne is also a nationally known keynote, motivational and technology speaker speaking over eighty times a year to organizations, corporations, colleges and universities throughout the United States. He is rated as a “Professional Speaker” with the National Speakers Association and has won several awards including the Orange County Register Everyday Hero Award and the MBKU Humanitarian “V” Award as well as various volunteering and writing awards.
