What to expect
Clients can expect professional, appropriately sized sound reinforcement without unnecessary complexity.
For a straightforward event, this may mean a clean speaker system, wireless microphones, music playback, and everything needed for speeches or presentations to be heard clearly. For live music, I can provide a complete PA system including mains, subwoofers when needed, stage monitors, microphones, digital mixing, and professional live audio engineering.
I handle the technical process from setup through teardown. Before the event, I determine what is required based on the venue, audience size, schedule, and type of entertainment. On site, I set up and test the system, coordinate with performers or event staff as necessary, operate the equipment throughout the event when required, and remove everything afterward.
For live bands, performers can expect proper microphones, monitoring, soundcheck, and an experienced engineer actively mixing the performance rather than simply having equipment dropped off.
The goal is simple: clear, reliable sound and a technical process that the client, planner, venue, and performers do not have to worry about.
About
Waddell Sound and Lights provides professional live sound and event audio based in Frederick, Maryland. I’m Ryan Waddell, a live sound engineer who provides both complete sound systems and experienced audio engineering for events throughout Maryland, Washington, DC, Northern Virginia, southern Pennsylvania, and the surrounding region.
My work ranges from straightforward events requiring speakers and wireless microphones to complete live-band production with mains, subwoofers, stage monitors, microphones, digital mixing, and an engineer for the duration of the event. I regularly work with live bands, weddings, private events, corporate events, outdoor events, and other productions where reliable, professional audio is important.
For smaller events, I can provide a simple system without making the production unnecessarily complicated. For live music, I can provide and operate a complete PA system tailored to the band, venue, and audience.
I also work professionally as a freelance live sound engineer for other production companies and venues. Some of the performance videos and photos on this profile show events where I served as the audio engineer rather than providing the entire production package. These examples are included to demonstrate my experience mixing live performances and working in professional event environments.
My approach is straightforward: determine what the event actually requires, provide appropriate equipment, arrive prepared, and make the technical side of the event something the client does not have to worry about.
Additional booking notes
Systems are configured specifically for each event rather than using a single fixed package. I remain on site for every event to operate and monitor the audio system.
Available equipment and services include:
* Professional PA systems
* 12" and 15" full-range loudspeakers
* Dual-18" subwoofers for live music and larger events
* Professional digital mixing consoles
* Stage monitors
* Wireless handheld and lavalier microphones
* Wired vocal and instrument microphones
* DI boxes and instrument inputs
* Music playback
* Digital stage boxes and networked audio
* Professional FOH mixing and system operation
* Basic event lighting when requested
Live-band systems can accommodate multiple vocalists, instruments, playback sources, stage monitors, and larger input counts. System size is determined by the audience, venue, performance requirements, and desired coverage.
For every event, I handle delivery, setup, system testing, operation, monitoring, and teardown. For live music, this includes coordinating with the performers, soundcheck, monitor setup, and actively mixing the performance.
Power requirements depend on system size. Smaller systems can generally operate from standard venue power. Larger systems, particularly those using subwoofers or lighting, may require multiple dedicated circuits. Requirements are determined before the event.
For live music, an input list and stage plot are helpful but not required. I can work directly with the band to determine what is needed.
Adequate setup and soundcheck time must be available before guests arrive or the performance begins. Outdoor events require reasonable protection from rain and severe weather for equipment and the operating position.
Final equipment selection, staffing, setup time, power requirements, and pricing are based on the specific requirements of each event.
