Valerie Nies - Poet
Overview
Valerie Nies is a comedian, poet and gluten enthusiast. She's written for humor sites McSweeney's and Reductress, and her sketches have been featured on Jezebel, Bitch, Salon, and Huffington Post. Her poetry has appeared in Rattle, Anti-Heroin Chic, Rue Scribe, and Pine Hills Review, among other outlets. Her chapbook, Imaginary Frenemies, was published by Toho Publishing in 2021, and her full-length collection Snacks for the Love Hungry, will be published in 2022 by SLP Books. Her humor and poetry are deadpan funny, relatable, surprising, and subversively satisfying. She can give readings as well as teach workshops on writing stand-up comedy, incorporating humor in storytelling and poetry.

About
Valerie Nies is a comedian, writer, and gluten enthusiast living in Austin, Texas.
She's written for humor sites McSweeney's and Reductress, and her sketches have been featured on Jezebel, Bitch, Salon, Huffington Post, and Grub Street. She’s won multiple screenplay awards for sitcom pilots and spec scripts that never aired. She's performed stand-up at the Out of Bounds Comedy Festival and the Big-Little Comedy Festival, and hosted the frequently sold out stand-up show Smile More in Austin, Texas for 4 years.
She has written a comedic one-woman show "How to Say You’re Afraid of Commitment in 140 Characters or Less," produced a popular self-help podcast Help Wanted, performed on storytelling shows in Austin and LA, and won awards for television scripts that never aired.
She’s also taught a stand-up comedy class for 3 years through The Institution Theater and currently teaches through Ether Comedy and Merlin Works.
Valerie is also a published poet with work appearing in Anti-Heroin Chic, Rue Scribe, Pine Hills Review, among many other outlets. Her chapbook, Imaginary Frenemies, was published in 2021 from Toho Publishing and her full-length collection, Snacks for the Love Hungry, is forthcoming from SLP Books.
She spends a good deal of her free time scanning WebMD and ridding her clothing of cat hair.
She loves performing comedy, reading poetry, and teaching workshops on incorporating humor in storytelling and other forms of writing.
