3-Chord Petty was born out of a passion for music not surprising since I started performing in elementary school, then high school, college and finally professionally in Los Angeles during the height of the "LA Sound" that included the Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, CSN, Jackson Browne, etc. Using the latest technology, I create studio quality audio backtracking combined with live performance to deliver an interactive presentation and flexibility for most occasions such as. weddings, parties, company events, and yes even wakes! For instruments I dont play I send the audio files to professional musicians who record their part, send them back to my studio where vocals are overlaid.

As someone who has toured the country playing in a multitude of venues I recognized the importance of augmenting the location and event and not dominate what is going on. So if playing a wedding for example, I concentrated on complimenting the couple's special day and help make them the center of the show. On occasions a bride, groom or guest will ask to sing along or solo and I try to accommodate this within limits as long was we both know that they can actually carry a tune and know the words to the song :0
Since I focus on classic pop music from the 1970-90s, I play a wide variety of songs from the Eagles, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Seeger, Stings, Brooks and Dunn, Big and Rich, Linda Ronstadt, Grace Slick, Joni Mitchell, etc. On occasion I have guests musicians "sit in" at no extra charge which adds a new element of spontaneity, excitment and performance to the show.
Most important, the audience is the main focus and I appreciate those who have hired me and respect their time and efforts , so I show up prepared, early (not just on time), don't drink before during or after the show, and dress accordingly just like my mother taught me to act in public :)
I started out playing in elementary school through college and then professionally. Having grown up in Southern California in the 1970-80s, I was in a perfect location to personally see many of the now legendary bands play at local clubs such as The Whisky on Sunset Strip. I am also a classical/commercially trained vocalists having studied with the late Dough Strawn who was with the Carpenters for ten years then Director of Entertainment at Disneyland and Dr. Jo-Michael Scheibe who was the department chair of Choral and Sacred Music at the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California. I have also worked at Paramount Studios and the Record Plant both in Los Angeles. I play both electric an acoustic guitar including vocals, have my own production studio and have been a university professor since 2008. I have an Associate Arts degree in performing vocal arts, a BA in management and Human Resources, an MBA in statistics and a PhD in organizational development/psychology.
I have my own PA systems and pretty much all of the equipment I need to be a solo performer, but a venue with lighting is alway helpful. All my equipment is insured against loss or damage but then again, some people do get carried away by the excitement of the event. Just saying.
If possible, I like to visit the venue, see photographs or call the venue manager in advance just to make sure everything is in working order just incase the room is not conducive to a live show. Not all venues work well with power cables running across a rooms, so I tape those down just to be safe.
