Six years and several deployments later, his local reserve center closed, so Brian transferred back over to the Army National Guard and served two additional years.

Brian Shartzer grew up near Illiopolis IL. He broke a school track record, made 2nd All-Conference Running back, and graduated in 1990. He married his high school sweetheart and worked in factories for several years. To better himself and his young family, he joined the US Army in 1996 and graduated from a small-unit combat leadership course.
