Setting a new standard for soul music in West Michigan.
Boasting a dynamic lead singer and a cadre of the region’s most talented musicians, The Soul Syndicate does that and more, paying tribute to Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder and the most influential R&B artists of our time in vintage fashion – with a sophisticated look, masterful musicianship and boatloads of soul.
Led by acclaimed singer Diego Morales and guitarist Mike Coon, this seven-piece powerhouse outfit brings together respected musicians from a host of notable bands to create a supergroup dedicated to re-creating the classic sounds of ’60s and ’70s soul music, from “My Girl” to “Let’s Get It On.”
“We approach the endeavor as a total package,” insists Morales, known for his work with Soulz of Rhythm, The Machines and The Daytripperz, among other bands. “We’re after the songs that other bands might be afraid to attempt. We choose to do great songs and polish them to as close to perfect as possible. What we’re after is a re-creation of a classic soul/R&B show of years gone by.”
From their matching suits to their rare musical chemistry, the seven members of The Soul Syndicate pay attention to detail, dynamics and delivery, led by their charismatic frontman, whose emotion-drenched vocals permeate each song.
“Diego’s soulful vocals capture the style of music perfectly and his showmanship and professionalism are second to none,” says Coon, perhaps best known as one of the founders of another R&B-hued group, Deborah Kay & The Bluebloods.
“And we feel like we really have a lineup of best-in-class local musicians in this band. Each player is a master of their craft and a great contributor to the overall project. Everyone ‘gets’ it and is excited about making it a superior product. It’s an overall great group of guys that have become friends as well as band members.”
The dedication to that soulful vibe is so intense that the band complements its robust renditions of familiar songs such as “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg,” “These Arms of Mine,” “Shake” and “Hold On, I’m Coming” with its own songs – originals written to reflect the same musical ambience with a neo-soul sheen.
It’s the sort of approach and attitude that’s already earned the high-energy group a reputation as “a real crowd pleaser” with Morales spurring fans into “Twistin’ the Night Away” on the dance floor while he croons and wails with unbridled passion.
“What I can say is I put 110 percent emotion into the delivery of the songs we choose to do,” says Morales, a multi-instrumentalist born of Cuban parents who was raised on everything from Nat King Cole to Elvis Presley to Tom Jones to The Beatles.
“Performing a song that I love is always a great joy and challenge for me. I want to do it justice, I want to pay tribute to the original artist, but most of all I want to make the listener feel exactly how they feel when they hear the original – that song that means so much, that evokes a hundred feelings. That’s the greatest high of all.”
