Overview

The Laser Comedy Show is a fun and unique experimental comedy show that's like an improvised comic book meets puppet show as the live drawn characters are voiced by the artist, Chris Fair, who does it all from behind a light reactive screen. Every show is curtailed to its audience as Chris mines the audience for suggestions to base the story on and afterwards, lets the audience partake in drawing on the screen. This show should be done in a dark room with a captive audience.

It's tough to say

The performance involved a screen, the performer drawing pictures on the screen with two laser pointers, and narrating a story that I could not follow. The children sat on the other side of the screen and were interested for 5 to 10 minutes before running amok. No music. Minimal interaction with the children. The performer did not seem particularly comfortable with the children. The three year olds really liked it, but my audience was 6-7 year olds. The performer said he would tailor the story to the party theme but I don't see how that happened. On the plus side, the performer arrived on time, set up and cleaned up on his own, and asked before helping himself to pizza leftovers.

The Laser Comedy Show

Hi Laura, thank you for the positive review from a professional standpoint. Based on the rest of your review, I feel I must defend my performance. The theme of the party was the children’s show “the odd squad” where kid agents investigate paranormal phenomenon & have teaching moments through out the show. I watched a couple episodes to prep. I then did what my show entails. I talked to the kids upfront about what to put in the show. I used your kids & 2 other volunteers’ names to use as characters, the phenomenon suggested from the kids was a Floating Ms. O (the kid agents’ boss) & a giant spider with a cat head & something about a “weird agent team” which wasn’t in my research but I made a character Agent Weird with a beard. I did my best to string together a story using the basic structure of the TV show. Kids find Ms O floating & go investigate. I tried to insert teaching moments into the show like who discovered gravity & how gravity works, subtracting times of the day to determine a length in time, multiplying 10s to get 100 & 1000, how to figure out your left & right hand, etc. I also voiced a theme song at the show’s start.
Yes, the kids got a little rambunctious through out the show due to the nature of the performance. I am behind a screen drawing, voice acting, writing letters & numbers backwards but because I’m not making eye contact w/ the kids through out, it’s a little harder to keep them entirely engaged. Some kids wanted to watch me draw from the side which is fine.
The few times I peeked out, I saw a majority of children watching the show. I could tell kids were engaged because they were giving me feedback through out the show. After the story, kids also got to draw on the screen w/ a laser which many really enjoyed. Afterwards a 7 y-o & a parent told me they liked the show. Thank you again for taking a chance w/ my comedic, laser-drawn puppet show. Custom shows are challenging but I felt I did the theme justice & I had a lot of fun.

Great show for Children's Museum - ages 3-8

Chris did a great job of engaging the audience and feeding off of their energy. His program does require a very dark space so we used a basement level room with no windows - test your room in advance and be sure you can turn off any bright safety lighting.

Amazing!

Chris was great. He dealt with some very rowdy kids and kept them entertained. His talent is truly remarkable and we loved it!

What to expect

I show up with my case and sound/Mic system if needed. I set up my Laser Reactive Screen and my sound system for the show. The show should be in a room or theater that can become very dark with a captive audience. The host or person in charge can introduce me where I would talk with the audience and mine them for suggestions. There may be some events like a wedding where I might do this separately or ahead of time in order to prepare a script for the show. When I am ready, I will ask for the lights to be turned off and then I will retreat to behind my special screen and start drawing and voicing characters for the show until my alotted time is up or that I feel the story has reached a desired conclusion. Then, slowly bring the lights up. Afterwards, if desired, some audience members can draw on the screen. There's even an option where I will bring up a volunteer to do a short set with me. It's usually very fun.

About

Chris Fair has been performing for over 18 years from standup to improv and sketch comedy. He grew up in St Charles, Illinois. with a speech impediment and a fear of public speaking so he's come a daunting way to have studied at the World Famous Second City Theater, Improv Olympics, comedysportz and multiple independent theaters throughout Chicago. In early 2011 Fair, who is also a talented illustrator, invented the concept of The Laser Comedy Show that combines drawing and improv which he has performed at comedy festivals and shows all across the USA and Western Europe. Fair also performs his signature Laser Comedy Show for children and families at libraries, schools and private events.

Additional booking notes

The room I perform in should be able to be very dark. This show is made up of bright lights (laser lights) and may not be for those who are sensitive to bright lights and especially if they are epileptic.
