Really FUN performance

We had the Hip Bones perform for us at Atria Longmont. It was a really FUN performance. The four guys were very interactive with our residents, learning about them personally and telling jokes. Our residents enjoyed this performance so much that we've already booked them for their Holiday Jazzy performance!

We will invite The Hip Bones back!

Our residents were absolutely entertained by The Hip Bones this month (December 2022) and requested that we have them back outside of the Winter Holidays! Courteous, prompt, and incredible communicators The Hip Bones are the utmost professionals and entertainers. We were kept attentive with the increedible harmonies, the educational interludes, and personal shares throughout the hour long performance. Best event of the season and we are so excited to invite them back more than once per year. A total Hit! Thank you Hip Bones!

These "Bones" are full of Life!

The Hip Bones are a great group of very talented men who stare a love of playing the trombone! As I looked around, toes were tapping, people singing along, and the applause after every song was very enthusiastic. They were perfect for helping to make Christmas memorable with their nice selection of Holiday songs, and I understand they have a good variety of musical selections for the rest of the year too. Our Residents and the guests in attendance all said they thoroughly enjoyed the performance! We will definitely be bringing them back!!!
Thank you for celebrating Christmas with our Community!

About

Our lead player, Steve, an experienced professional trombonist and educator, recently relocated to Colorado from Southern California. He has toured as the lead trombonist for the big bands of Harry James, Mel Torme, and Bill Watrous, and worked for many years as a freelance musician in the Hollywood music scene. He has written arrangements for professional acts as well as for school jazz ensembles, brass ensembles, and marching bands, with works published by UNC Jazz Press, Almo Publications, Touch of Brass Music, and Hal Leonard Corporation.
Steve hails from the San Francisco Bay Area, where he served as jazz instructor at De Anza College in Cupertino, CA, for nearly 12 years. He has also taught classes at a number of Music Schools, and has been a private instructor for many years. Since moving to Colorado in late 2020, he has appeared with the Flatirons Jazz Orchestra, and the Harmony Hotshots Jazz Band, as well as "Chaz Bowles' Titan Hot 5".

Originally from Southern California, Amber moved to Colorado to complete her Master’s in trombone performance at Colorado State. Before Colorado, she earned a BM in Trombone Performance and a BA in English from the University of Texas at Austin. Experienced in a wide variety of music, some of the highlights of Amber’s career include touring Spain with the CSU Wind Symphony, going to the International Trombone Festival twice as a performer with the UT Trombone Choir, and performing with Joe Hisaishi (Studio Ghibli) while still in high school! Amber has been teaching trombone, euphonium, and tuba for several years, and currently enjoys working with undergraduates at CSU. When not playing trombone, Amber likes cuddling with her two cats and refurbishing Furbies.

Mike is now enjoying some incredibly busy retirement years after 40 years teaching band in the public schools of Tennessee and Colorado - as well as serving as the Director of Bands at the American School of Asunción, the American School of Bombay, the American International School of Bucharest, the International School of Prague and Accra, Ghana’s Lincoln Community School. Mike has always sought to be active in the local arts community, assuming such diverse roles as acting and creating sound designs for OpenStage Theatre Company, showing his photography at local galleries and playing trombone in Bucharest’s Jazz Cube, Prague’s Pralinka Band, and here in Northern Colorado in the Linden Street Brass Quintet, the Loveland Concert Band and the Eastern Colorado Trombone Choir. He enjoys international travel, is an avid hiker and mountain biker as well as motorcyclist.

Chris is a graduate of Wichita State University, BA in Music. He studied under WSU Professor James F. “Bub” Gould, himself ensembled in earlier years with Charlie “Bird” Parker. Growing-up in Wichita made it possible to participate in the Wichita-area Stage Band, Wichita Youth Symphony, WSU Concert Band and WSU Symphony Orchestra. Over the years, Chris, has been a member of several quartets/quintets, and Community bands. Here in Fort Collins, a former participant in the Fort Collins Wind Symphony, and Just For Kicks Big Band. Currently a member of Colorado Swing Big Band and Foothills Symphonic Concert Band.
