What to expect
I like to think I offer something that a wide variety of people would like. I start my shows off calm and easy. It's early in the night and people are usually talking/eating/just starting to enjoy the beverages. I mix in more of the slower to mid-tempo songs early. It is a solo Acoustic Show so you are probably wondering how crazy it might get anyway right?
With me you are going to get a lot of rock-n-roll from the 60'-90's era. I'll play Bob Dylan, Dobie Grey (Drift Away), then maybe jump to something like Jamey Johnson's "In Color" and then to Matchbox 20's "3 a.m." I like to mix in some that people don't know, but they usually end up dancing to like James McMurtry's "Talkin' at the Texaco" or Ray Wylie Hubbard's "Wanna Rock-n-Roll." Both are three chord bluesy rockers. I'll mix in some Creedence Clearwater Revival with "Born on the Bayou" and maybe "Lodi" along with U2's "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For." All of that is mainly first set type stuff.
For a three hour show, I usually play an hour-and-a half and take a 15 minute break and then jump back up there for the final hour and 15. I play Bob Seger's "Turn The Page" and "Night Moves" along with the Rolling Stones' "It's Only Rock-n-Roll But I Like It." Van Morrison's Brown Eyed Girl. Sometimes I'll do Billy Idol's "White Wedding." I always do "Folsom Prison Blues" by Johnny Cash and usually "Purple Rain" by Prince. I'll do "Pink Houses" by John Mellencamp. Also Tom Petty's "Free Fallin". And if the crowd is really feeling it (and it's the right crowd for it) I'll do "Fight for Your Right (to Party)" by the Beastie Boys. I always close my show with Mellencamp's "Authority Song" with a medley in the middle including "Land of 1000 Dances", "Devil with the Blue Dress On" and "Good Golly MIss Molly" in the middle of it.
It's always a fun night.
About
I grew up in the small town of Shelbina, MO, located in Northeast Missouri, the son of a high school history teacher and an elementary school secretary. I was a three-sport athlete in high school and played two years of NAIA basketball. At that point I was burned out with basketball, and at 20 years old learned to play the guitar.
I had been writing lyrics since I was 16, and putting the words to music changed my life. I've always been influenced by the songwriters, Dylan, Mellencamp, Springsteen, James McMurtry, and many more, I've striven to be like them, but do my own thing at the same time. I've played in bar bands and still do from time to time. But the solo-acoustic gig is where I can do what I want, when I want and where I want.
I love writing and recording. I came out with my first studio album in 2023 ('Hope for a Better Day') which is on CD and all the digital platforms. I was fortunate enough to have the legendary Kenny Aronoff (John Mellencamp, John Fogerty, Bob Dylan, Melissa Etheridge, Smashing Pumpkins, etc...) play on one of my songs. I'm in the process of recording my second album now.
I was in the newspaper business for 29 years, starting as a general reporter, and ended up starting my own paper with my brother, and owning and operating it together with him for 18 years before selling it. I also freelanced for the John Mellencamp website for five or six years. My wife and I live in Quincy, IL. where she is a Midwife at a birth center and I currently teach school across the river in Hannibal, MO.
I love getting out and playing shows. I love live music, interacting with the crowd. I really love meeting people and learning more about them. I tell venue owners I can play cover shows, original shows, or a mixture of both. I've done all three many times.
Additional booking notes
I have a small set up, with a small board and two speakers daisy chained. I run the mic, speakers and acoustic guitar straight through the board with no effects. I only need to be close to one power source (outlet). Approximately 20 minutes to setup and 20 minutes to tear down.
