What to Expect
You can expect fun, professionalism, honesty and humor. Usually an acoustic guitar is the medium, but not limited to that. Blues, pop, and originals are the core of Barrett's solo act when no specific styles or requests are made by event planners. Though everyone loves to know every song, Barrett really strives to bring songs you 'might have heard' that are the right fit for a program. Being able to weave through countless styles and genres is something people claim - Barrett does achieve this. This comes from years of teaching at School of Rock, bringing comfort to all ages and ranges - from 6-96, from Kiss to Bob Marley. Crafting sets the way he writes songs, details on style, speed/tempo, meter (straight rock vs waltz) and key all play roles in making a set flow. Whether it's 15 minutes or 3 hours... the show should unfold and tell a story the same way each song does. Barrett really enjoys improvising and creating soundtracks and songs on the spot, often times with the audience or event's purpose woven within.
Barrett started playing piano at 3 years old, learning from his great-aunt. By 5th grade when they put a trombone in his hand he could read and write both clefs freely. Placed into jazz band, the teachers noticed how quickly he picked up 'bone, and they need to fill the bass chair - in both jazz bands and orchestra. By the time he was mixing in cafe's and clubs at 16years old, he had added guitar, banjo, and mandolin. Studying audio in college quickly landed him a job on major stages in chicago, and had him rubbing shoulders with the bigs as a monitor engineer. Reaching back in performing he formed a funk/jazz/jam band with marginal-regional success... ...but more importantly, give him the chance to put all his skill sets to use - writing, composing, arranging, performing, improvising, recording, producing, mixing, editing, booking, touring, and managing the 7 piece band for 7 years became a passion & fulltime job.
Once the band broke up, he started his own audio company. Mixing freelance, consulting, building studios, mastering, playing for hire, producing, sound design, composing for games, film, and advertising, - anything that allowed him to grow as an artist, challenge him as creator, and push him to the next level became the focus.
After a break of running his own band, and strictly playing for hire or passion - he started, "Barrett's Hidden Agenda" with friends and teaching mates. Surrounding himself with players passionate about fabricating a sound in every song, telling a story through sound, and driving each other as players, performers, and artists is the cornerstone of the group.
Additionally, Barrett was invited to a collaborative song-writing week. This really pushed him as a multi-instrumentalist, audio engineer, and human. This songfamily has brought new craftmanship to his playing, and more importantly - his humanity. It's brought him across the country and back multiple times through multiple projects. He's produced songs, played 12+ instruments on 12+ records through the musically knit family based out of these week long events.
Now, Barrett is offering his services as a musician, engineer, and person to those that don't know him directly. Surviving on word of mouth for years, he's excited to meet people and share his talent, making lives and evenings a bit more fun, a bit more creative, and certainly - more musical.
Additional Booking Notes
Tech rider changes gig to gig. As a professional sound engineer for 20+ years, I speak fluent tech and audio geek language. I can provide my own PA and sound support, or will gladly interface with the house engineer based on the shows' need. If it's a solo show:
1 Boom Stand
2 XLR cables
I'll bring my own microphone, instruments, cables, and DI's. If anything changes based on the needs for the event and stage, we'll certainly communicate in advance. As an engineer, I've found a stage plot to be a "page of half truths," and I pride myself on delivering an accurate stage plot for each event in advance.
