What to expect
I always work with my clients to choose just the right music for their event. For wedding clients, your aisle songs are the most important — the songs you'll enter the ceremony with, and the song you'll leave to as a married couple! After booking, I'll send you my song list and a guide to the musical parts of your ceremony — how many songs to choose and where they fit. If you're not sure what you want, I'm happy to make suggestions or put something together for you. I play for more than 75 weddings every year and have helped a lot of couples through this process! If there's something specific you'd like that I don't already play, I enjoy the artistic challenge of arranging music for the harp and will use that skill to create the perfect soundtrack for your day.
For other types of events and background music situations, I'll ask you about your guests' musical taste and the vibe you want to create, and whether there are any specific songs from my song list you'd like included. I've also developed curated song lists aimed at pleasing a multi-generational audience that work for various vibes: an upbeat set list I typically use for corporate receptions, cocktail hours, and parties; a softer romantic-style set for showers; a reflective and peaceful song list for memorials. I always watch the guests to see what they're enjoying, and then go with that flow.
What a wedding ceremony looks like:
I typically play for about 30 minutes as guests are arriving, then play the entrance songs for the wedding party and couple. I'll also play a recessional as you leave as a newly married couple. If you have me stay for cocktail hour, I have a system set up to quickly move between ceremony & cocktail hour locations.
Performance Options:
I offer two harp options: you can choose between traditional harp (picture a harpist seated next to an elegant instrument), or a strolling harp, where I move from table to table or room to room, bringing the music directly to your guests. It's a fun and unexpected experience for your guests, and is also a practical solution for multi-room venues.
Logistics:
I'll communicate my arrival time with you directly as it varies by event, but I usually arrive 30 to 60 minutes before my start time to set up and tune the harp. I typically bring my own professional sound system unless the venue has one I should use instead. I’ll also communicate with you about any other logistics specific to your event beforehand so the day itself is smooth and easy!
About
As a composer and arranger for the harp, Shelley’s repertoire draws on diverse musical traditions — from classical music and Celtic tunes to pop covers and world music — and she has traveled in Mexico, Chile, and Ecuador, interviewing harpists who play the traditional styles of those regions. She performs both as a soloist and with the Boston HarpBeat. Performance highlights include the South Shore Folk Music Club, the Boston Recorder Society Concert Series, opening for Maddy Prior at the Music Haven, and private events in France, Puerto Rico, and Mexico.
She provides music for more than 250 weddings and private events every year. Corporate clients have included Harvard Law School, McKinsey & Company, AstraZeneca, Citizens Bank, TIDES USA Conference, NAR Conference, American College of Physicians Board of Governors, Perkins Coie, and others. A member of the Knot's Wedding Hall of Fame, Shelley maintains a five-star rating across major event planning platforms and has been an annual award winner on multiple wedding platforms since 2012.
Additional booking notes
A lot of people ask if the harp can be played outside. Yes! I have a battery-powered amplifier that will help the sound carry. I can also play on the beach as long as I can put down a cloth to protect the harp from the sand.
