Handpan in the Redwoods

Overview

Ash is an SF Bay Area–based handpan musician who has been practicing and performing for more than ten years. The handpan itself is a modern melodic percussion instrument created in Switzerland in the early 2000s. Inspired by Caribbean steel drums and crafted to resonate with warm, ethereal overtones, the handpan is played by hand and produces a uniquely immersive blend of melody and rhythm. Drawing on a decade of experience, Ash brings this enchanting instrument to life through performances that are soulful, atmospheric, and deeply moving. His music adapts naturally to a variety of settings, from intimate gatherings and art spaces to weddings and private celebrations.

Additional booking notes

I provide my own cardioid microphone and PA system for most performances, which helps ensure clear, high-quality sound for small to midsize events. I do require access to a standard power outlet for the PA setup. For larger events or venues with existing AV, I’m happy to coordinate with your sound team in advance. A clean, sheltered performance area with enough space for my instrument, microphone, and speaker setup is ideal. If your event has any specific sound, staging, or logistical requirements, I’m glad to discuss them ahead of time so everything runs smoothly.

Influences and inspiration

My handpan style has been especially influenced by artists like Dante Bucci and Kabeção. I’m drawn to Dante Bucci’s expressive, melodic approach and the emotional depth he brings to the instrument. Kabeção has also been a major influence, particularly through his rhythmic complexity, phrasing, and the way he blends technical skill with atmosphere. Their music has helped shape my own approach to creating performances that feel both immersive and emotionally resonant.
