Incredible and so authentic with such a genuine personality and rosy cheeks I still am not sure if he really might be Santa. Seeing isn’t believing. Believing is seeing.

Santa Barney brought magic to the Ronald McDonald! He made every child feel special and seen. The hand painted watercolors he passed out from Mrs. Claus was such a hit and the kids buzzed about him long after his visit. Highly recommend!

About
About Barney Combs
For more than 40 years, Barney Combs has made a life of bringing stories to life.
Long before he became Santa Barney, Barney was a historical interpreter, educator, storyteller, and living historian. For more than four decades, he has stood before visitors of all ages and done something that goes far beyond simply telling them about the past. He has learned how to make people feel as though they have stepped into another time and are meeting someone who actually belongs there.
For 15 years, Barney portrayed Daniel Boone at the Historic Daniel Boone Home in Defiance, Missouri. As Daniel Boone, he did not simply recite facts about a famous frontiersman. He became the character. He studied the history, the people, the language, the circumstances, and the world in which Boone lived. He learned to listen, observe, improvise, read an audience, and let a story unfold naturally rather than simply delivering a memorized script.
That experience profoundly shaped the way Barney portrays Santa Claus.
Bringing Santa to Life
Barney believes the best Santa is not someone who simply puts on a red suit. Santa must feel real.
His years as a historical interpreter taught him that authenticity comes from understanding the character deeply enough that the story becomes natural. A great interpreter does not merely perform a person from history. He creates the sense that, for a little while, that person is genuinely standing in front of you.
Barney approaches Santa in much the same way.
Santa Barney has a history, a personality, memories, opinions, stories, and a lifetime of experiences. He listens carefully to the people he meets and responds to the moment rather than relying on a collection of rehearsed lines. A child's question can take the conversation in an entirely unexpected direction, and that is often where the most memorable moments are found.
His background in historical interpretation also taught him something particularly important about storytelling: the audience is part of the story.
Whether he was standing in a historic cabin as Daniel Boone or sitting beside a child as Santa Claus, Barney learned to pay attention to the person in front of him. Is the child excited? Curious? Hesitant? Overwhelmed? Is a parent hoping for a photograph, while the child really wants to tell Santa a story? Sometimes the most important thing Santa can do is slow down and listen.
That is the heart of Barney's Experience-Centered Santa philosophy.
More Than Telling a Story
Barney's approach to Santa is rooted in the same principles that have guided his decades of historical interpretation: authenticity, connection, believability, and respect for the audience.
As Daniel Boone, he learned that a believable character does not need to constantly announce who he is. The story, the mannerisms, the knowledge, the conversation, and the details create the character.
Santa works the same way.
Barney does not see Santa as a costume or a character who appears for a few weeks each December. He sees Santa Claus as a living tradition, a storyteller, and a grandfatherly presence who has been entrusted with something precious: a family's Christmas memories.
That perspective changes the encounter.
Instead of simply asking a child what they want for Christmas, Santa Barney may discover what makes that child excited, what they have been learning, who they love, what they are proud of, or what they are curious about. He may tell a story from the North Pole, share a bit of Christmas wisdom, or simply sit quietly and listen.
The goal is not to create a photograph.
The goal is to create a memory.
A Lifetime of Service and Learning
Barney's commitment to interpretation and education has been recognized at the local, state, and national levels. He has been recognized by three Missouri Governors for his contributions to preserving and interpreting Missouri history and was commissioned a Kentucky Colonel by Governor Ernie Fletcher, the Commonwealth of Kentucky's highest civilian honor.
His honors include the National Association for Interpretation's Outstanding Interpretive Volunteer Award, NAI Region 6 Outstanding Interpretive Volunteer Award, the Association of Missouri Interpreters Outstanding Interpretive Volunteer Award, the St. Charles Parks & Recreation Lifetime Achievement Award, the St. Charles Parks Advocate Award, and the Historic Daniel Boone Home Lifetime Volunteer Award presented by Lindenwood University.
He is a Life Member of the Association of Missouri Interpreters and a graduate of the National Association for Interpretation's Certified Interpretive Guide program.
Barney's commitment to service extends beyond historical interpretation. As a volunteer and board member with Missouri River Relief, he supports environmental stewardship, river education, conservation, and programs that connect people and communities to the Missouri River.
Santa Barney
Today, Barney brings more than four decades of interpretation, storytelling, education, and public engagement into his portrayal of Santa Claus.
He is a real-bearded professional Santa Claus who continually invests in advanced education and professional development. He is a Gold Member of the Worldwide Santa Claus Network and a member of the Silent Knights of Santa, Nationwide Santas, GigSalad, and GigRoster. He is a graduate of the Worldwide Santa Claus Network Santa Claus Portrayal and Business Mastery Program and is a Certified AuthentiClaus™. He is also a graduate of Pro Santa School's Advanced Santa Studies Program.
But perhaps the most important qualification cannot be printed on a certificate.
It is 40-plus years of learning how to connect with people.
It is 15 years of walking into a historic home as Daniel Boone and convincing visitors, for a little while, that they had stepped backward in time.
It is thousands of conversations with people of all ages.
It is learning when to speak, when to pause, when to improvise, and when simply to listen.
And it is understanding that the finest storytelling is not about the storyteller.
It is about the person experiencing the story.
That is what Barney brings to Santa Claus.
When he puts on the red suit, he is not leaving his life's work behind. He is bringing all of it with him.
The historian becomes the storyteller.
The storyteller becomes Santa.
And Santa becomes part of the family's story.
Listen. Connect. Care. Every time.

Influences and inspiration
My passion for portraying Santa Claus stems from a lifetime of inspiration, training, and dedication to the spirit of Christmas.
I have been influenced by timeless holiday films such as Miracle on 34th Street (1947), It’s a Wonderful Life (1946), Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town (1970), Elf (2003), A Christmas Carol (1984), How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000), A Christmas Story (1983), and many others, as well as the performances of iconic Santa Claus portrayal artists. Special influence comes from Santa Ed Taylor, known as the “THAT SANTA GUY”, as well as early pioneers such as Charles W. Howard and Jim Yellig, and contemporary Santa Claus portrayal artists like, Santa Dale Dimas and Santa Thomas Sheerin. I also credit the Worldwide Santa Claus Network and The International Brotherhood of Real Bearded Santas' for their training, guidance, and invaluable insights into authentic Santa portrayal.
Beyond the art of performance, my love of Santa Claus is rooted in a deep appreciation for the spirit of Christmas and the joy it brings to people of all ages.
I bring additional experience in historical interpretation, with over 40 years of volunteer service portraying historical figures. I portrayed Daniel Boone for 15 years at The Historic Daniel Boone Home at Lindenwood Park in Defiance, Missouri, and have also brought to life other historical figures, including some of my own ancestors. I am trained as a Certified Interpretive Guide through the National Association for Interpretation, a background that enhances my ability to create engaging, authentic, and memorable experiences.
