What to expect

The guests will hear a collection of theme poems (related to an event) which will reach their hearts and minds.

About

Henry L. Jones is an award-winning poet (Poet Laureate of Hendersonville, Tennessee), artist, playwright, and performance artist. Whether writing or art, his work digs deeply into roots to understand identity, culture, history and social issues. Jones weaves stories and poems from many experiences which he's shared at conferences, university lectures, festival events, workshops and arts collaborations. His poetry appears in many anthologies, journals, magazines, films and newspapers. The creative has won numerous fellowships, residencies, and awards for his work. Jones strives to touch listeners hearts and minds providing a memorable moment.

Additional booking notes

Imagery: For some presentations, I'll use images or video footage related to the stanzas of a poem.

Sound/Music: Background music or sound effects is sometimes played to accompany certain poems.

Lighting: Sometimes I use ts spotlights as a means of putting a focus on me or an accompanying person mentioned. A gradual fading of that spotlight is used sometimes to create a dramatic effect.

Set list

I've sung a few lines of songs as a prelude to a poem. Then, at the end of the poem, I'd again bring back the part of the selected song. Of previous songs use, there are too many to list. Their genre included Spirituals, gospels, R&B, Jazz and Blues.

Some of my literary influences include: Maya Angelou, Nikki Giovanni, Langston Hughes, Alice Walker, Dr. W.E.B. DuBois, Sonia Sanchez, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Gil Scott-Heron, Rita Dove, and Amiri Baraka
