Michael Balsamo, (b. 2001) is a fourth year undergraduate student at The Peabody Institute of Music at Johns Hopkins University, where he is studying Classical Music Composition with Michael Hersch. He also studies Orchestral/Wind Conducting with Dr. Harlan D. Parker. Michael is a composer, conductor, arranger, pianist and a well known musician throughout Long Island, New York, as well as the state of New York. His first choral composition, “Praise The Lord, God Almighty,” Received merit in a National Composition Competition in 2019. He later on formed his own virtual choir and got it performed. He also is well known for his piano skills. among other distinctions in his musical career, Michael has been requested to play in Pit Orchestras throughout Long Island, New York. He has played lead piano in the productions, “The Little Mermaid,” “Nice Work, If You Can Get It,” “A Christmas Carol,” “In The Heights,” and “Legally Blonde.” He also played piano for the auditions of the musicals and accompanied auditions for the select choir at his high school. In 2022, Mr. Balsamo’s Trombone Quartet was selected to be premiered by the Trombones of the United States Navy Band. During his time at Peabody, he has written for Clarinetist, Heather Roche, the Peabody Wind Ensemble, the Peabody Symphony Orchestra, and multiple instrumental and voice departments throughout the institute. In May of 2023, Michael attended New York University’s The Steinhardt School’s Summer Film Scoring Workshop. Prior to his studies at Peabody, Michael was a piano student of Charlotte Day who studied under Arthur Rubinstein.
