April 18, 2026Blew us away!
I can’t say enough great things about Ricky. Not only was he fantastic to work with, but his photos are absolutely stunning. We hired him for our wedding welcome dinner and he captured so many candid moments that we will cherish for a lifetime. Ricky was so easy to work with. He was a great communicator, showed up early, and even offered to stay past our schedule event to make sure we got every moment we wanted photographed. Our photos were given to us so quickly too! Only one week turnaround and we received hundreds. I will definitely be booking Ricky again in the future for other events.

April 15, 2026College Graduate Pictures
My son is graduating college and Ricky met with him to get some great grad pictures. Jake plays baseball in college so he was running late and Ricky was more than willing to be flexible with his schedule. They took traditional grad pictures, some baseball shots and some more professional pictures. I wasn't there but my son said Ricky was great to work with. We are looking forward to getting the pics. Based on Jake's opinion, I would highly recommend him!

Your son is a wonderful guy! And clearly (as we walked the campus) beloved by his friends and fellow students - he came up with some great ideas and I threw mine in there too, and it turned out to be a great, productive day. Photos forthcoming - I will keep you posted!

February 15, 202690th Party for my Grandmother
Ricky did an amazing job! He communicated well his plan and his style of work. He captured so many touching moments of my grandmothers 90th that my family will these photos to use and cherish forever. I initially thought we would take our own photos. I’m so glad I hired a professional and he definitely made capturing our event memorable and allowed us to enjoy.

Thank you dearly, Chevon. It was a complete pleasure and your grandmother (and loving family) are an inspiration - I delighted in every moment of it!

September 25, 202560th birthday party
We had a wonderful experience with Ricky! We hired him for my mother in law’s 60th birthday party and he did not disappoint. His communication was excellent, and he did a great job taking both candid and posed photos. We received hundreds of edited photos less than a week after the event. We would definitely use him again!

What to expect
• Clear and complete communication with the client in order to design the project best according to their needs
• I show up early for each event - either by hours or on an earlier date (depending upon the complexity of the shoot) in order to ascertain the most suitable equipment to use, as well as to get a very specific sense of the location and the requisite lighting requirements for the event.
• I work in the most unobtrusive manner possible - stealth-like, as needed. For quieter events, I use mirrorless cameras that have silent shutters. I seldom use flash, as it often disrupts the attention as well as the focus of the event - instead I use cameras with high-speed apertures.
• I am always happy to engage with the clients at the events (for general conversation, direction, suggestions) or any guests at a function who might want a specific shot at a specific time (assuming this has been cleared with the client.)
• I enjoy working with children, adults, the elderly, and any community or culture that is interested in preserving memories of a cherished event.
• No event is too small; no event is too modest. If you are having friends and family over for a small dinner, having a Halloween Party for 6 or a Sweet Sixteen Party that only lasts an hour – I will be there, and ready to go!
• I use a variety of cameras and lenses – including digital and film – from the most recent DSLRs to the most venerable film cameras and lenses (several of which date back to the 1950's) - always dependent upon suitability for mood, ambience, effect.
• In processing, I work with six different software editing systems (Photoshop, Nik Collection, Exposure 5, Topaz Studio, Luminar Neo, Capture One) - sometimes in combination with one another as needed, although I do not edit for edit's sake - sometimes all that is needed is a slight adjustment of color balance or contrast. I do as much work as needed in order to assure the best possible results for each and every photograph.
• I ensure 24-72 hour turnaround for each project. Within that period of time, I will send a cache of anywhere from 100-300 carefully edited photos to the client via (link hidden). These photos will be full resolution and print-ready. I can also advise on services for local and remote printing of books and large frame work.
• I love my work. I take it seriously but I seriously find it fun. I am both eager and happy to meet you and work with you. Even with short notice, if I am free, I will be there. Photography is my profession and my joy.
About
I grew up in Florida and Maine where even at a very, very young age, one of my favorite things to do was to spend time with my Dad watching (and assisting, ever so slightly) as the photographs he produced from his old Nikon F camera would magically and elegantly appear under the spooky red lights of the darkroom!
Since those days I have engaged in many professions, and much of the work that I have done - such as writing, graphic design and sound engineering - has informed and enhanced my skills and styles for what I consider my most satisfying work - walking out into the world with a camera - anywhere and everywhere it would take me!
My greatest joy is spontaneous portraits, images of people in their work and home environment as I travel throughout North Carolina and often beyond. Within both film or digital, I love to discover elements in the photograph that reveal and reflect the nature of the subject arrested in less than 1/250th of a second that otherwise might have been missed - this feeling that the moment will reveal what comes before it and what is about to occur at the same time, and the challenge one feels in trying to exercise sensitivity and awareness of capturing the interim when it arrives, and the ability to respond quickly enough to fix it within the frame for keeps.
Here are some of the very wonderful people and organizations that I have had the pleasure of working with over the last five years:
Ackland Art Museum • RayLen Vineyards • Full Frame Documentary Film Festival • Carolina Boxer Rescue
NC Wildlife Federation • Burwell Farms • SOAC • Claudia Fulshaw Design • Cirque de Vol • PS118 Gallery
NC Polka Time Allstars • Agbiome, LLC • School of Rock Chapel Hill • Robins & Morton Construction
Church Work Services • Katya Kramer Lapin • Eller Capital Partners • Jordan High School • Southern Village Events • Orange County Rape Crisis Center • Sonic Pie Productions • Magnetic Sound Studios • The Bipeds • Indigo Dance Evolution Academy • Fathers On The Move • Wake Forest Listening Room • North Carolina School of Math and Science • Durham School of Math and Science • Duke University Hospital • UNC Hospital • Chapel Hill High School
Additional booking notes
I have a large collection of DSLR (Nikon, Pentax, Fujifilm), 35mm (Nikon, Contaflex, Ihagee EXA, etc.) and medium-format cameras (Fujicon, Pentax) for my work, as well as a substantial amount of post-processing software (Photoshop, Exposure 5, Capture 1, Luminar Neo, Topaz Studio, Nik Collection, etc.) that permit comprehensive capability for achieving mood and spirit with my work.

Influences and inspiration
I have a bevy of treasured influences! They include but are not limited to:
Helen Levitt (The Master of the Lower East Side Shot)
Gary Winogrand (The Master of the Up Close & Personal)
Joel Meyerowitz (Pioneer of Color Street Photography)
Lewis Hine (Workers Advocate & Champion; peerless 3d-like replications of the old world)
Mary Ellen Mark (Documentarian of Darkness)
William Eggleston (Champion of the Ordinary)
Maria Švarbová (Startling Photographer of Hyper-Unreal Soviet Era Swimming Pools)
Vivian Maier (Relentless and Hidden from View: an eye like no other)
Billy Dee (Peerless NYC and Beyond Street Photographer)
WeeGee (Certifiable Nut Job Who Captured Crime and Despair with Disturbing Clarity)
Sally Mann (Taught the world that the oversized 19th century large format camera was worth lugging around)
Andrew Bush (The Bright Lights of Ordinary Life)
Jim Marshall (Any Rock n roll photo that sticks in your head was done by this man)
Julia Margaret Cameron (Before most people knew what a camera was, she had mastered it)
To be sure, these are fascinating photographers that I would recommend to almost anyone - but their styles wouldn't necessarily be appropriate for all events. Still - they are fun (and inspirational) to visit.
Setup requirements
A bottle of water, and when indoors, as much and as varied light as possible
