About
Hailed as "a sexy talent" by the Donauwerter Zeitung (Donauwert, Germany), percussionist Julie Strom has performed throughout various countries, and with different groups. Julie began to study percussion at the age of six and was publicly performing shortly after. Born in St. Louis, MO but mostly raised in Charlotte, North Carolina, Julie studied with Rick Dior and Carol Stumpf of the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra and at age 15, won the Grand Prize to perform Darius Milhaud's Concerto pour Percussion et Petit Orchestre with the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra. Julie is a recipient of various grants; among them, Manhattan School of Music merit, Luski-Gorelick, Marie B. Rowe, John Sousa. In 2004, Julie was awarded the prestigious Fulbright Scholarship to study under Prof. Dr. Peter Sadlo in Munich, Germany. In 2005, after undergoing another interview process, Julie was awarded yet another Fulbright which enabled her to complete her Meisterklasse Diplom (doctoral degree status in Germany) at the Hochscule Musik und Theater Muenchen. After finalizing her studies in Munich, Julie moved north to Copenhagen, Denmark where she spent 3 months teaching percussion and studying with Danish professor Gert Mortensen of the Royal Danish Conservatory. Julie recently completed her Doctor of Arts degree from the University of Northern Colorado.
Julie Strom is recognized as "a captivating and gifted artist" (Lubecker Zeitung). Appearing in the U.S., Canada, Europe and Asia, she has collaborated and toured with many professional orchestras and chamber groups including the Munich Symphonic, Munich Chamber Orchestra, Boston University Tanglewood Institute Orchestra, Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival Orchestra, and the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra. With a special passion for modern music, Julie has become a well respected chamber and solo musician. Performing with "flare and cat-like movements" (Fulbright News), she has performed, premiered and recorded many contemporary works.
Julie Strom's talent goes beyond the borders of performing as a percussionist. With a fervor and fascination for theater, she performed a role in the show "Cirque Dreams Jungle Fantasy" in 2008 at the Broadway Theater in NYC. Additionally, Julie has written, produced and performed her own percussion/theatrical show entitled, "Alice On Time." In this one-woman show, Julie rewrote the text of the classic tale "Alice in Wonderland," making the new version a discovery of rhythm and its wide variety of concepts.
Julie is currently based out of Colorado but is willing to travel.
