Providing waitstaff service to clients along with event planning. Cooking services also available. Specializing in homemade ice cream. Professional, personal service making your event special.
Context: the initial quote request read as follows:
"We need 1-2 servers for set up and clean up of a wedding reception featuring a taco bar buffet and giant pretzels. It's in the same place as the ceremony, so there will be some room flipping. We also need a bartender for a full bar at a wedding reception. Probably not the full 8 hours I listed for this (more like 5 hours, but bartender could also help with set up and take down? Alcohol will be provided."
The contract, presumably written by Pattycake Connections, read (verbatim, all errors in original) as follows:
"2 professional waitstaff are available to woto event as scheduled. Staff will set up ,serve, replinishi food, disguard empties, xlean uo and orger needed duties. 1 Professional bartender will work 5 hours."
They also asked that we bypass the GigSalad system and pay them directly, etc. (we didn't).
Rachael explained on the phone and in documentation, in detail, exactly what needed to be done and when. Patty agreed to everything and didn’t indicate an issue until just before the event.
Two days prior Rachael gets a call from the venue indicating that there's some confusion and to call Patty. Apparently, and I cannot emphasize strongly enough that I quote, "we don't move furniture because we're women." The "furniture" in question comprises folding tables and chairs which can easily be set up by one adult. I lose my temper and remind them that failure to perform the agreed upon duties would constitute breach of contract and that we could sue them (actually, "setup" was one of the few things in the contract spelled correctly). At being reminded of what had been agreed upon Patty threatened not to come at all. Rachael talks to them and they "agree" to come on the condition that they don't have to deal with me anymore.
I had to teach the bartender how to make our three cocktails: margarita, old fashioned, and amaretto stone sour. A self-proclaimed "Professional bartender" should know how to make these. She asked at least one guest if she wanted ice in her wine. The staff claimed never to have received the cocktail recipes from us. Maybe not in writing because we got some emails bounced back from a bad address they provided. Nevertheless, the recipes were provided over the phone as well.
We had a taco bar (Big Star, highly recommended) for dinner. It was served buffet-style, but we made it abundantly clear that they should be behind the buffet serving the guests. Instead they just stood behind the buffet awkwardly. They also set up the buffet in an absolutely ass-backwards way, in an order of toppings, tortillas, meat (i.e. to assemble your taco you went to the middle, the end, then back to the beginning). I guess we didn't explicitly instruct that the buffet should be set up in order of tortillas, meat, toppings, but that seems obvious. The combination of the lack of service and stupid setup order meant that the last table (there were only 80 people or so) got its food 45 minutes after the first.
Our officiant had to fill people's water glasses.
Serving champagne for the toast was handled entirely by friends and family.
Same for the cake.
The bar was left unattended much of the time and guests took turns bartending... and did a much better job making the drinks than the "professional."
Friends and family did the bulk (all?) of the cleanup.
A significant amount of garbage was left over and the dishes were not rinsed properly (which will probably end up costing us with the rental company).
The staff received detailed instructions in both electronic and hard copy form (we can prove this). Everything was agreed upon beforehand. The end result was my wife, the bride, crying in the car because she was so embarrassed that our friends and family, who were supposed to be there as our guests, ended up being the help.
Worked my brothers wedding and there were only 3 set drinks for the menu. I ordered one and I’d get the other. Drinks were nearly undrjnkable. Set up a taco buffet backwards. And the staff literally disappeared halfway through the night
Patty Cakes was hired for our wedding as additional support for things like dinner service and the bar. However, from about two days prior when they announced that (despite it being in the original quote request to flip the room and set up of reception after a ceremony being in the contract) they do not move furniture “because they are women” to the end of the evening, the entire experience was a mess.
It should be noted that a detailed timeline with notated duties throughout the night was emailed to them several days before hand, in addition to a phone conversation explicitly laying out expectations. They arrived an hour late to the venue for set up, had no knowledge of basic bartending (it appears that due to a non-working email address that they did not get the list of drinks before hand, but the “professional bartender” did not know how to make an old fashioned!), the two assistants kept asking the Day of Coordinator for instruction as if Patricia weren’t their boss, the BRIDAL PARTY had to set out the folding tables for dinner, the maid of honor rolled silverware, the Patty Cakes team did not know how to set tables for basic banquet service, their attitudes were terrible, on more than one occasion they were found just sitting on drink racks in the back while guests were wondering who was going to clear their plates, the OFFICIANT of the wedding was refilling everyone’s water during dinner because the staff seemed confused about how that worked, the FATHER OF THE BRIDE at one point ended up behind the bar serving drinks to guests because the staff had disappeared again, the cake cutting and service was a mess—in that more of the bridal party was serving poorly cut pieces than the staff was (oh and the cake server they said they would bring failed to materialize and the day of coordinator has to borrow a cheese knife from a nearby venue), they did not serve the taco buffet as they were clearly told to do, they did not do basic things like fill the beverage dispensers, and they kept having to be told when to do things as if they had never worked a wedding or even served in a restaurant before. The friends and family were able to keep things going smoothly enough that the bride and groom were able to mostly enjoy their evening without the Patty Cakes people being a huge distraction (although the bride was literally crying over the whole mess in the car ride after the wedding) , but it was absolutely a problem for some of those people to be able to enjoy and celebrate the evening as a result. They LOOKED put together and professional, but their attitudes and incompetence and laziness absolutely belied the uniforms.
Patty cakes came on time and in uniform . Pleasant and friendly as well.
