You can expect a lively, danceable performance from Old Lou's Ragtime Band. Most of our shows are entirely acoustic and don’t require amplification. Our sound evokes the spirit of early jazz and the vibrant street bands of New Orleans. We perform authentic tunes from the 1920s alongside familiar modern songs reimagined in the New Orleans style.
Old Lou’s Ragtime Band is a traditional jazz band from Louisville, Kentucky. We have been reviving the energy and spontaneous feel of early jazz since we formed in 2018. We strive to authentically replicate the sounds of early New Orleans jazz musicians such as Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, Kid Ory, Joe “King” Oliver, and others. Our instrumentation is typically clarinet, trumpet, trombone, tuba, banjo, drums/washboard, and vocals. We take our name from our tuba player’s beloved Golden Retriever, Louie (affectionately known as “Old Lou”), while also paying homage to the Old Lou neighborhood in Louisville, where the band first came together at the U of L School of Music. We regularly perform at distilleries, breweries, outdoor markets, community events, private parties, weddings, funerals, and parades across the Kentuckiana region. Since our band typically performs acoustically, our technical requirements are minimal. We only need enough chairs for our performers and can comfortably set up in a space as small as 8' x 10'. For larger events, we’re happy to provide our own sound system and tent for an additional fee.
We have a gig book with 80+ tunes that we heavily rotate. We are also consistently working on new arrangements, and have access to a collection of over 1,000 songs that we can work up.
