Overview

Need some pirates in your life? We are a pirate-themed performing group who can bring high-quality music, fun, history, and some zaniness to your private party or public event. We sing period and no-so-period songs from the maritime and medieval/colonial periods interspersed with a little history, a lot of humor and colorful piratical garb. We sing madrigals for the King by day, pub songs for the hoi polloi at night with love songs and sailor songs all day (with occasional children's songs thrown to avoid an "Arrrrr" rating).

Arrgh! Pirates and Pilgrims!

The Motley Tones were absolutely wonderful addition to our annual Family Party!
We change the theme every year, and this year was Pirates of the Caribbean. I found. Mötley. Tones on Gig Salad, and everyone at the party really enjoyed their professional and fun performance! I would highly recommend them for any party that requires laughter, frivolity and tomfoolery! Pirate Hats off to you, Motely Tones!

Awesome fun!

The Motley Tones were fantastic! They swaggered into my husband's "Late Middle Ages" birthday party with rousing song and crazy pirate banter. Lots of fun and quite beautiful harmonizing on sea chanteys, madrigals and folk songs. Lovely performers and people to have at any period party! High recommendation!

Beware of A Pirate Animation Invasion from Motley Tones

On Sunday, 2 June 2013 while at the Hampton Blackbeard Festival, I was pressed into service along with my Hysterically Correct crew mates to sing and play with the Motley Tones of Raleigh, NC. They are a high energy, upbeat animated band of real "cut ups" who musically recreate tall tales on the high seas of yesteryear. Their particular fusion of voices, instruments and antics instantly transport land lubbers of all ages back to the times when pirates were the scourge of all law abiding deep water sailors. It is all for fun and fun for all when Motley Tones steers in to your home port.
Musically Yours, Mr. Squeeze of Hysterically Correct Pirates

What to Expect

We sing an eclectic mix of period and not-so-period maritime tunes, sea shanties, madrigals, love songs and children songs. We aim to entertain and interact with our audience rather than perform background or dancing music.

Our songs range from a capella harmonies to traditional "call and response" tunes to duets & solo ballads. All loosely tied to the "Golden Age of Piracy." We incorporate pieces of period garb and stories into our performance as well as just plain fun stuff.

We are capable of providing 2-3 entertainers, or the entire group of 6 and tailor our show accordingly.

About

We provide a group of 2-7 performers who can provide a musical program for your party, event, or sea battle. We entertain adults and children alike. We perform a variety of maritime, piratical, Celtic and renaissance tunes--some with accompaniment, some without and most with beautiful and ear-pleasing musicality to which people everywhere love to listen.

Our repertoire includes sea chanteys, madrigals, traditional and modern tunes--mostly related to the early years of maritime & pirate history. We dress in semi-authentic garb, which is to say that we strive to look like pirates by using as much period material as we can while still being "visually interesting" as performers.

Child-friendliness and bawdiness can be tuned to taste--let us know what you want.

Additional Booking Notes

We can perform from stage, where we typically require 3-6 microphones and 2-3 D/I connections for the guitar, fiddle, and mandolin internal pick-ups.

We can also work "unplugged," moving in and around the audience and interacting directly with them. Great for parties and "street performing."

Influences & Inspiration

A few of us originally sang period music and pub songs in a group with NC Renaissance Faire. The wonderful Pyrates Royale of Maryland Ren Faire fame have been an inspiration, as have the Crimson Pirates of NY and others. We steal from the best.
