Hello! I am a professional opera singer based in Charlotte, NC. I travel frequently, singing with opera companies and orchestras all over the country, including The Metropolitan Opera, San Francisco Opera, Utah Opera, Arizona Opera, the Charlotte Symphony, Opera Carolina, and Chicago Lyric Opera. But when I'm home between gigs, I'd to love to make your event special! Weddings, church services, funerals, parties, galas, corporate events... you name it!
If the word "opera" scares you, don't worry, I can turn off my "opera voice" too! I'm able to do either or both classical and non-classical repertoire for your event.
I will travel to any location if client pays travel and lodging expenses.

January 29, 2023Melinda Whittington performed for the Trilogy Lake Norman "Supper Club" a couple weeks ago. Her performance was nothing but exceptional! Her voice was incredible and her stage presence was astounding! The audience praised our choice of performer that evening, and we're pleased Melinda graced us with her "Amazing Performance"!

September 4, 2019I just want to thank Melinda Whittington for such a wonderful job! She exceeded my expectations. As a freelancer she is cooperative, easy to work with, and extremely talented. This was the only time I had ever hired her but I would absolutely hire her again in a heart beat. I hired her to sing at a private family dinner party. I was blown away by her talent and so was my family. Her talent transformed a normal family event to the type of experience that goes on forever. The memories from that day will last a lifetime. Her talent is equivalent to any on Broadway and she is will not be ruffled by changes in circumstances. She was pleasant and flexible when the venue changes in regards to where and when she could perform. That type of situation can fluster any performer, but she took the changes in stride and still gave us a magnificent performance. I highly recommend Melinda. Her abilities will add a level of professional entertainment and Opera singing rivaled only by those in Carnegie Hall and the likes.

I can perform with an orchestra or chamber group, a single accompanist, to tracks, or a cappella. I am also happy to help you find a pianist or instrumental group to join me for your event.
I have a Master's degree in Vocal Performance and Pedagogy (yes, I also teach voice lessons in Charlotte!) from UNC Greensboro, and a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from UNC Chapel Hill. I completed post-graduate studies at the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia, a very prestigious residency that bridges the gap for young singers to the professional world. Other young artist programs where I've received training and experience include Wolf Trap Opera, San Francisco Opera's Merola Young Artist Program, and Brevard Music Center.
I have sung leading roles with opera companies all over the country. I most recently returned from debuting the role of Mimi in La bohème with Minnesota Opera. I recently had the pleasure of working on The Metropolitan Opera's Grammy-winning production of Philip Glass's Akhnaten. Other recent roles include Violetta (La traviata, Opera Carolina), Donna Anna (Don Giovanni, by Mozart) with Utah Opera, Arizona Opera, Opera Carolina, and Opera Grand Rapids, Ada (Cold Mountain, by Higdon) and Nedda (Pagliacci, by Leoncavallo) with NC Opera, Fiordiligi (Cosi fan tutte, by Mozart) with Charlottesville Opera, Rusalka (Rusalka, by Dvorak) with Arizona Opera, Juliette (Romeo et Juliette, by Gounod) with Opera Birmingham, Countess (Le nozze di Figaro, by Mozart) with Opera Carolina and Opera Grand Rapids.
I was a national semifinalist for the Metropolitan Opera's 2013 vocal competition, becoming one of only 20 singers from across the country to compete on the stage of the Met! I have also won prizes in numerous other vocal competitions, including first place with Opera Birmingham and the Charlotte Opera Guild and third place at Fort Worth Opera.
I live in Charlotte, NC with my husband and our two little boys, one and three years old. I am also an adjunct voice teacher at Davidson College and available for private lessons.
No amplification required - opera is all about the power of the natural human voice! :)
If you would like me to perform jazz standards, an amplification system might be needed, depending on the size of the room.
