November 11, 2024Jim brought the atmosphere to our rehearsal dinner, playing all the tunes that resonated with a multi-generational gathering. He never over-shadowed the event, but surely added an extra sparkle to a beautiful night. Jim was so easy to work with -- a great communicator, eager to please, and super talented. I had a perfectly tuned Samick baby grand piano to play, a roomful of loving family and friends toasting the future wedding couple, and impeccable service from the Hamilton Club staff catering to all our needs. A native of the Logan/Olney section of Philadelphia(near LaSalle University), Jim resided in Green Lane, PA since the '70's, moving 5 years ago to Catasauqua PA. Gifted with a great ear for music, he took piano lessons for seven years from age 6 to 13--yet plays by ear primarily. He was in his first rock band at age 15, played several lead roles in high schools plays and musicals(Nathan Detroit in "Guys & Dolls", Henry Drummond in "Inherit the Wind" and Jesus in Stephen Schwartz' "Godspell"). After two years as a Theatre & Speech major at what is now known as DeSales University, Jim was hired at WAEB radio in Allentown at age 20 to do news/weather reports in 1981. After 5 months there he did a one-year stint as disc jockey for rock station WZZO(Z-95), then headquartered in Bethlehem PA(met Joan Jett twice, Ozzy Osbourne, Kansas, Mike Reno of Loverboy, ZZTop, Johnny Van Zant Band). The band "Vagabond" then tapped him as their keyboardist for a year in 1983 and they played the Lehigh Valley and New Jersey extensively, opening once for the Hooters. From 1984 to 1987 Jim did 5 major productions for Richard Akins Productions as an actor--playing Jesus in "Jesus Christ Superstar", Magaldi in "EVITA" and more. In 1986 Jim began his foray into the piano/bar/restaurant world which he continues to this present day. And now some highlights:
Jim Loftus Has Opened For Regis Philbin (State Theatre in Easton,PA--Jan.1992);written an original rock opera musical "GHOSTS ON BROADWAY" which played NYC's John Houseman Theatre in May 1995(attended by Grammy and Oscar-award winning composer Stephen Schwartz. [Jim is currently working on bringing the show back to NYC in a bigger production]; he played tribute dinner functions at the Plaza Hotel,NYC for the late Rosetta Lenoire and Douglas Fairbanks, JR. (April 1996),also the late Milton Berle (Oct.1996--Waldorf-Astoria Hotel)and Julie Andrews (Feb.1997--21 Club); Jim and his trio Three Together opened for Todd Rundgren at Crocodile Rock,Allentown, PA(Oct.2001). He's done TV and film extra work in Philadelphia and NYC. The CBS show "HACK"(5 episodes) earned him his SAG card in 2003(now "SAG/AFTRA"). Jim has worked on 15 episodes of "Law & Order:SVU"--his first one as featured jury member in "Strain"(Oct.2005) being his most featured.
Jim released an original 14 track CD in Sept.2000 entitled "The Fame Game" available digitally on CDBaby, iTunes and can be heard on Spotify, YouTube and more.
Jim currently works with a trio "Vinyl Persuasion" which features 3 part harmony classic pop/rock gems from the '60's/'70's/early '80's--the "vinyl record era" and can be found on Facebook. He also plays with "The '60's Boy's"(formerly "The Mudflaps" for a few decades)doing late '50's/'60's/early '70's classic pop rock gems, sometimes with a 4 piece horn section--playing mostly festivals and grand events. And of course Jim does a great deal of solo work as a pianist/vocalist/keyboardist AND organist for public and private events including senior residences/country clubs/wedding ceremonies and receptions/cocktail hours/restaurants and certainly house parties.

Jim played for our wedding ceremony 9/23/06 and we were so pleased with his performance, his willingness to accomodate our special requests and his professionalism. We invited Jim for our annual Christmas party with friends in our home. He did an absolutely incredible job! He was very communicative throughout the pre-event process. He asked about our event, including the desired music, necessary equipment, audience, etc. He showed-up well ahead of time and was prepared for the event. We found him to be both very professional and very personable - he totally hit it off with our guests. In terms of performance, Jim blew our socks off! There was not one song requested that he didn't know how to play--everything from holiday standards to rock, to ballads to a few country songs. Jim had fun singing with and helping the kids sing their songs and he encouraged adults to join in. Jim's skills as both a piano player and vocalist were well beyond expectations. Jim played at a party I held at my home that over 80 people attended last weekend. I had very specific ideas in mind for this party and I looked to Jim to help me acchieve those ideas. I had a list of about 90 songs that I had asked Jim to play that evening as the party was planned as a sing a long. Sort of like a dueling pianos bar type of atmospehere only one piano palyer. He learned every song and his keyboard kept each song to its original intergity. The evening was a huge success. Jim had every song down and was extremely flexible with moving songs around and editing on the spot as needed, when time started to run out. The compliments I received on the evening were due largely to Jim's ability to entertain the crowd, be flexible with them, be flexible with me, and provide a level of entertainment that made sure my guest left my home that evening feeling like they had the time of their lives. Jim played our cocktail hour at the Stroudsmoor Country Inn on May 19, 2007 and did a fantastic job. He played songs from a requestlist and other crowd pleasers. He took requests, playing the wedding song of another couple during the event to their delight. He was very professional and easy to get in touch leading up to and before the event. We had a surprise birthday party with 60 friends and Jim was fanstastic. He arrived on time, played both the keyboard and acoustic guitar skillfully, and sang songs everyone knew and enjoyed. Jim was a professional in all respects. He called and emailed in advance to verify all arrangements and directions. He arrived early and set up in advance of our guests arriving, then he blew us away with his talent. We really heard everything from "Maria" to David Bowie. We had a mixed age group, from about 14 years old, to 70 or so and everyone enjoyed his music. Get him to do his "Phantom" medley... it will still the crowd. We do a lot of parties, and we have hired a number of professionals over the years. Jim is second to none. Pleasant, well dressed and groomed, and very interactive with my guests. Jim was fantastically professional. He communicates timely and efficiently. He arrived at the wedding and set up well ahead of schedule. He played for 5 hours straight and only contracted two 10 minute breaks. He learned and prepared 4 special request songs for us with only 2 weeks notice and did an amazing job on them. He has great ideas and suggestions. He was EXTREMELY honest and upfront with us on any questions that we had for him. He also agreed to do introductions at no extra cost for our wedding which was not included in the original agreement. His acoustic guitar and keyboard skills are top notch.
