Brittney “Laleh” Banaei has been studying and performing dance since the age of 14. Her dance education began with Yasmin Al Abassi of Springfield,Missouri, and went on to include intensive study with Yasmina Ramsy of Arabesque Academy (Toronto) and Suhaila and Jamila Salimpour (Berkeley). Most recently she has studied with Amy Sigil (UNMATA, Sacramento) and is currently a certified instructor of UNMATA’s Improvisational Tribal Style.
Brittney is currently working towards a degree in Dance and Anthropology at Missouri State University, and intends to use her research as a catalyst for change. Being from a Middle Eastern background, she has seen first hand cultural misunderstanding, and she began to see a great need within her community to bridge cultures through the universal language of dance and music. Through her continued study of both Eastern and Western dance forms, she aims to translate and transmute the dance of various cultures in a way that brings new understanding of our general human condition, and hopefully establishes common ground between cultures that cultivates more compassion and understanding.
Brittney’s community involvement in Springfield spans many years, with an emphasis on bringing cultural, thought-provoking, and different work into the local arts scene. In 2006 she wrote, cast, and performed in a show outlining the history of Bellydance, and in 2012 she directed and choreographed a show mixing electronic music, dance, and manipulative arts to create a truly unique evening of integrated performance. Her annual conceptual show “The Big Show”has offered a performance platform for local dancers for many years. She is also very involved with the Springfield Dance Alliance, and has choreographed and performed in every show they have hosted since the organization’s inception. In October of 2014 her “Say Something” choreography was selected as the winner of the SDA’s Community Dance Slam.
As a performer, Brittney is renowned for her passionate, uplifting, and generous stage presence, as well as deep musicality and precise technique. Often called a ‘stylistic chameleon’, she draws upon her knowledge of many dance forms in order to clearly express ideas and emotion that results in a unique brand of dance fusion.
Brittney choreographs and directs for her experimental dance company, Phenomenon, established in 2011.
