About the founder:
Professional dancer, choreographer, Afro-dance specialist - A M A K U – is a Brooklyn-born African artist on the verge of making her mark in the world of traditional and contemporary African dance – a world most in the United States know very little about. A classically trained dancer of Nigerian Efik descent, A M A K U became seriously interested in traditional and contemporary African dance styles 8 years ago while on a trip to Nigeria and has been a diligent student of African dance ever since. She began her professional dance career in 2006 performing traditional dances from Nigeria under the direction of Perfecta Ekpo - a choreographer and former dancer with the National Troupe of Nigeria. Subsequently, she began to study and perform traditional Central African dance, and contemporary African dance styles as a part of SIRENs – Protectors of the Rainforest, a dance company headed by the Cameroonian dancer and choreographer Mambo Tse. In 2007, she became a serious student of dances of the diaspora – namely Hip-hop, Street Jazz, House dance styles, and funkstyles and can be seen dancing regularly at Broadway Dance Center and practicing her breakdancing skills in Bushwick. To date, A M A K U has performed in such cities as New York, Toronto, London, Washington D.C. , Paris and Calabar, Nigeria and has taken to the stage at such venues as EuroDisneyland, The Victoria and Albert Museum, The Apollo Theater, NYU’s Skirball Performing Arts Center and the United Nations. She has choreographed and performed for such artists as Tolumide and Emperor Adichie and has performed with artists from several African countries including Nigeria, Cameroon, Ghana and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Currently, among other projects, A M A K U is working on choreographing and performing for Kontemporary AfriKa – the traditional and contemporary African dance group that she formed early in 2011. A M A K U’s mission is to share her unique interpretation of Hip Hop and traditional and contemporary African dance and promises to be entertaining audiences with her novel concepts, visionary aesthetics and extraordinary dancers. A M A K U is based in Brooklyn, New York.
