This important host feedback is valuable. I do make an effort to ask questions in advance and come prepared to mitigate any potential logistical challenges. With this particular performance, I did mention to the host that I would be bringing a small amplification system which is commonly used in a restaurant atmosphere. I was not informed in advance that the restaurant was booked to maximum occupancy and that the dedicated musical performance area was set with a table and guests. Upon arrival, I had about 30 minutes to work with restaurant management in finding a performance spot. None of the options were ideal and there were safety issues. At the same time, the father of the birthday girl said out loud “we’re easy,” leaving me with the impression that the solution we agreed upon was acceptable to all parties. I thought I had also made it clear that I was more than willing to accommodate and pivot towards the alternate solution at any time.

I perform at parties and gatherings because I love bringing the joy of music to children. This review is a reminder that logistics can spoil the fun and more dialogue in advance might have helped towards a more acceptable outcome for the host.

Going forward, I will add a layer of due diligence and initiate direct communication with the venue a week in advance to be sure they are aware their client has commissioned a live musical performance.
