Influences and inspiration
Music has always felt like a second language to me. From a very young age, I had a deep connection to music that went beyond just listening — I studied it, felt it, and naturally connected with the emotion and creativity behind it. Because of that, I never limited myself to one genre or one type of artist. I genuinely appreciate great music across the board, and I think that open-minded approach has played a huge role in shaping me as an artist.
Even though I’m primarily a hip-hop artist, my influences come from many different places and genres. I pull inspiration from hip-hop, R&B, soul, melodic music, alternative sounds, and even certain country and pop elements at times. That variety allows me to stay creatively free and experiment with different sounds, melodies, and emotions in my music without feeling boxed in.
If I had to name my single biggest influence though, it would easily be Kid Cudi. Even if our music doesn’t sound identical sonically, his impact on me creatively is huge. I view him as a true creative genius. He helped create a blueprint for artists to be vulnerable, emotionally honest, experimental, and unapologetically themselves while still making music that connects with people on a deep level.
What inspired me most about Kid Cudi wasn’t just the music — it was the freedom in it. He showed that you could talk about pain, isolation, mental battles, ambition, and personal growth in a way that still felt artistic and impactful. That mindset influenced the way I approach my own music and helped me become more fearless creatively, especially with my melodic sound and emotional storytelling.
At the end of the day, I try to take pieces from everywhere and turn them into something authentic to me. I never want my music to feel limited or forced into one lane. I want people to hear real emotion, growth, versatility, and honesty every time they listen to a JoseKris record.
