About
Born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana, Jonté Mayon is an internationally acclaimed soul vocalist whose career spans Broadway, major-label recording, film, television, and some of the world’s most respected music festivals and concert stages.
Her journey began at just four years old when she made her stage debut at the 1984 World’s Fair. As a child, she toured nationally and internationally with the acclaimed musical Mama, I Want to Sing, including performances in Japan—an experience that introduced her to audiences overseas and marked the beginning of a lifelong career in music.
Jonté later became one half of the soul duo Fried, collaborating with David Steele of Fine Young Cannibals. The group’s debut album was released through London Records/Warner UK, introducing her distinctive New Orleans voice to audiences across the United Kingdom and Europe. The project later evolved into Things Change, released through Sony BMG, further expanding her international recording career.
Throughout her career, Jonté has built a reputation as a versatile and commanding live performer. She has appeared in film and television productions, including Disney’s The Princess and the Frog, Tyler Perry’s Meet the Browns, and The Campaign. Her vocal artistry has also led to collaborations with acclaimed artists including Jennifer Hudson, Usher, Jennifer Holliday, Anthony Hamilton, Calvin Richardson, RZA, Kirk Franklin, Dr. Shirley Caesar, Dr. Ricky Dillard, Kevin Whalum, Shirley Murdock, and Hannibal Lokumbe.
A seasoned international performer, Jonté has appeared at festivals including the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Essence Festival, Maspalomas Soul Festival (Spain), Porretta Soul Festival (Italy), and Umbria Jazz (Italy). She continues to perform as a resident vocalist at B.B. King’s Blues Club on Beale Street in Memphis and Three Marie’s Jazz Club In New Orleans, while also developing and presenting her own solo concerts that celebrate classic soul, rhythm and blues, gospel, and contemporary music.
Whether performing before thousands on a festival stage or delivering an intimate concert, Jonté is known for her rich, expressive voice, heartfelt storytelling, and the unmistakable influence of New Orleans’ musical tradition. Her performances bridge generations, honoring the roots of soul music while bringing warmth, authenticity, and joy to audiences around the world.
