What to Expect
Our most popular configuration is our five-piece band consisting of John Malino on vocals/guitar, accompanied by piano, bass, drums and saxophone. And his players are the best nyc has to offer. They are professional musicians with a long line of accomplishments. Of course, depending on your budget, and musical needs he can go from solo to big band.
In his 20 years as a bandleader, John Malino has been compared by the press to Harry Connick Jr. and John Pizzarelli. Malino has played such venues as Birdland, Late Night Jazz at Feinstein’s, Friday night Jazz at Sardi’s, Cipriani, the Santa Monica Music Festival, the Sacramento Jazz Festival, Garage, Bar Next Door, and the Kennedy Center. The John Malino Band offers a range of performance styles, from solo sessions with John Malino, to trios, quartets and even full-sized orchestras.
Malino, once called a “velvet-voiced baritone” by the press proudly states, “I’m one lucky man, because I work with the best musicians in the world. We get into playing anything, from Frank Sinatra to Hank Williams. My team knows how to dig into a tune. We don’t see any boundaries in music. And there’s nothing like spontaneity, the electricity between us and the audience.”
John Malino has shared the stage with jazz legend Lionel Hampton, and sax great David Sanborn has played sax on Malino’s original tune, “If I Had a Genie.” This stands to reason- the John Malino Band knows how to rock the joint as well as deliver the subtle romantic moods of the Great American Songbook.
When the John Malino Band plays, they don’t fool around. All the musicians in the Band have a long list of accomplishments. “We want to enjoy every song we play with the highest caliber of musicians,” says John Malino, “and we love a smart audience that appreciates quality.”
Additional Booking Notes
If you don't have sound, we can provide it for an additional charge. We recommend a stage or platform for the band. We would think that you'd want the band with a little lighting, we're not so bad-looking. But that is your call, we can play in the dark, our aim is to please!
John Malino can read a crowd and adjust his set list according to your wishes. Here are a few jazzy tunes: All of Me, Nearness Of You, As Time Goes By, Nice Work If You Can Get It, Devil Moon, I Get a Kick Out of You, They Can't Take That Away From Me, Witchcraft, Kansas City, S'Wonderful and the list goes on. Ask and we'll let you know if it's in our wheelhouse. (Also, check out the band's recordings- Live at Sardis and Live at Feinstein's available on Itunes and other music platforms.) Because John Malino started out as a rocker, he can easily incorporate classic rock and R&B into his set lists, depending on what mood you're going for. He can have people up and dancing- or mellow and martini-sipping, it's your party and your call.
