Do you need some cool grooves for your event? Let me help you out with that. I'm an alto/tenor sax, flute, Jazz-Electric/Classical-style guitar player, vocalist who can add spice and soul to any band or (as I often do) go it solo. The vast majority of work I do is as a solo (guitar, sax, flute or any combination) playing along with a pre-recorded background (primarily drums bass & keyboard) for smaller venues or private parties. This works gives you the feel and sound of a whole combo with less cost and hassle. Whether it's soul, R & B, smooth jazz, jazz funk, traditional jazz or popular music you're looking for... I'm your man.
Jeff was a wonderful addition to our garden/birthday party. His background music created a warm ambiance in the garden on a beautiful sunny eve! A must for any party, Jeff and his wonderful talent and warm personality fit with our theme beautifully! We would highly recommend him!
Response from Jeff Johnston:
Thank you, Mary Lou, it was a pleasure.
Jeff is awesome. He's professional, accommodating, easy to communicate with, and down right talented. He made our dinner event great and had it rocking! We will definitely book Jeff again and would recommend him to anyone. Thanks Jeff!
A thorough gentleman and a true professional. He followed up to find out more about the event so he could tailor his performance and dressing accordingly. Very well dressed for the occasion and would make any event elegant and successful.
Jeff used to live in Japan and I hired him to record trumpet on a song of mine.
He is reliable, well organised and did a great job of playing to fit what I had in mind, as well as making suggestions that I liked and used. He's a pro in the best sense.
I just sought him out to play on another track and found to my disappointment that
he's no longer living here... My loss, Portland's gain.
Please note: this booking actually occurred in Tokyo, but the review form would only allow a city in North America
Response from Jeff Johnston:
Hi Guy! Thanks for the review. I really appreciate it! If you're ever in Portland don't forget to get in touch.

What to Expect
I'm an experienced performer who understands that flexibility is the key in any performance or recording situation. I have no problem with adapting to any situation, no matter how last minute, and have become used to the standard "hurry up and wait" that so often is a part of the performance life. In other words I'll go with the flow how ever you need without muss or fuss.
Originally from Miami, Florida, I began studying music at age 7 (guitar). At age 12, I began playing trombone, trumpet and euphonium. During college, flute and saxophone. I studied music composition and classical guitar at Florida State University for several years until my freelance playing career became so successful that I left school to play professionally all around Florida. I’ve performed with blues legend Bo Diddley, popular ‘50s groups The Platters & The Coasters, jazz legends Randy Brecker, Red Rodney, Ira Sullivan & Marcus Roberts, pop icons Stephen Stills (Crosby, Stills & Nash) & Bonnie Raitt and more bands that I could ever count. I also spent 3 years with “The Mighty Big Blues Band” voted one of the top 10 club bands in America 1992 by the New York Times and recording an album entitled “Almost Live & Sometimes in Color”. In 1997 I moved to Japan, where I performed professionally with many club bands including an extremely popular Tokyo soul band called “Bumpadelic”. During this time I produced/wrote/recorded a series of mostly original children’s songs and two music video collections for the company, ECC Foreign Language Institute (a large English conversation school chain), on which I played all the instruments and did all the vocals myself. Also, while in Japan, I was a regular on the Fuji satellite network TV show "Go, Go, Eigo" playing variety of comical characters. I also did voice acting for Sony Dreamcast video games and Sky Perfect TV commercials for their Premier League soccer programs. Since moving to Portland in April 2015 I’ve performed with the Portland Wind Symphony, Hillsboro Symphony, for Nike at the Olympic trials at U of Oregon, at WineUp on Williams as well as dozens of private events. See and hear me on my Reverb Nation page under "Jeff (J.J.) Johnston".
