Overview
James Alan proves that magic really is for grownups. A Toronto-based magician and sleight-of-hand artist, he creates interactive performances for corporate functions, private parties and weddings across Ontario. No boxes, no flashing lights — just astonishing magic inches from your guests, often in their own hands.
Clients include Google, IBM, Scotiabank, RBC, Meta, Ernst & Young and the Toronto International Film Festival. The Toronto Star calls him "a magnetic presence on stage." CP24 was blunter: "James Alan blew us away."
He is also a working theatre performer, with over 200 sold-out performances of his own show Magic & Martini.

What to expect
Your guests won't watch this show. They'll be in it.
Every performance is built around the people in the room — their choices, their hands, their reactions — so no two events are alike. Money appears from nowhere. Thoughts get read. Objects your guests are holding do things they have no business doing. James performs the classics of magic with a modern sense of humour, and he reads a room quickly: a boardroom lunch, a black-tie gala and a backyard 40th all need different things, and the show is shaped to fit before he arrives.
Three formats, depending on your event:
Stage shows — formal performances for audiences up to 500. Parlour performances and house concerts — seated and intimate, for groups up to 50. Cocktail close-up — flexible mingling magic for receptions, dinners and standing events.
Sets typically run 20 to 90 minutes, and can be split across an evening — cocktail-hour mingling, then a short formal set after dinner.
Tell him the room, the guest count and what the evening is meant to feel like, and he'll tell you honestly which format fits, including when the answer is a shorter set or none of the above.

James Alan is a Toronto-based magician specializing in classical sleight of hand — the close, technical, in-your-hands kind of magic that survives being watched from a foot away. No boxes, no flashing lights. His performances are interactive by design: it's the audience and the choices they make that shape the show, which means no two are ever the same.
He has performed for Google, IBM, Scotiabank, RBC, Meta, Ernst & Young and the Toronto International Film Festival, at events ranging from boardroom lunches to national television.

Alongside corporate and private work, he has built a substantial body of theatre. His own show Magic & Martini (2016) paired fine dining and hand-crafted cocktails with close-up magic and ran over 200 sold-out performances in Toronto, Mississauga, Oakville and Orangeville. Before it, he hosted Magic Tonight, a weekly series that ran in downtown Toronto for more than two years — together, seven years of continuous weekly magic in the city. His solo shows The Uncertainty Project (2014) and Lies, Damn Lies & Magic Tricks (2012) were featured at the SummerWorks Performance Festival, the Hamilton Fringe Festival and the Wychwood Theatre. His most recent solo show, Mysteries and Lies, played the 2026 Toronto Fringe Festival.
He also created Bring Magic Home, an interactive virtual experience performed hundreds of times for teams worldwide, and The Choice, a close-up magic experience featured regularly at À Toi.

Professional sound equipment is provided at no additional charge for audiences up to 200. Larger audiences require staging and sound appropriate to the venue; James is glad to advise, or to coordinate directly with your venue's technical staff.
Setup takes approximately 20 minutes and can happen before guests arrive.
