April 7, 2026A Beautiful Melody and Medley
Haruna,
She surpassed our expectations. Her flute performance, which symbolically represented the sacred hymn, captivated the room and created a moment that will be etched in the memories of our spirits and hearts for eternity. I was thoroughly pleased and will seek to book her again.

About
Haruna Fukazawa is a New York-based flutist and improviser, originally from Tokyo, where she studied classical music. She studied with Frank Wess, and shortly after with his encouragement, she decided to move to New York. Haruna’s straightforward, joyful, and powerful playing style is inspired most by her legendary teacher and mentor, Frank Wess.
After she arrived in the United States, her career continues to evolve as she works in a variety of groups. Of note is her involvement with Karl Berger’s Improvisers Orchestra, which won the Downbeat Critics Poll six times. She has performed in some of the most prestigious venues and festivals in the United States, among them the Blue Note, Carnegie Hall, The Stone, The 55 Bar, The Bitter End, The Nash, and Edgefest, and furthermore, she performed at the Trieste Summer Rock Festival in Trieste, Italy, in 2010. It was the first time for a Japanese musician to perform at this festival.
Haruna is a multi-time winner of the National Flute Association (NFA) Jazz Flute Big Band Audition (2019, 2021, 2023). In 2022, she was a soloist for Ali Ryerson's composition at the NFA.
Haruna Fukazawa Quintet performs regularly; the album was released from Summit Records in 2019. Her album was ranked in 50 on Jazz Week (Jazz and Smooth Jazz radio stations airplay charts).
She was also featured on the cover of the Hot House Jazz Magazine. In 2021, the band was selected to be the featured performer at the 19th NFA Convention.
In addition as an improviser, she gave workshops on free improvisation at the NFA convention (2023), the New York Flute Fair (2024), and The International Low Flutes Festival (2024). Also, she was a guest improved soloist for Tango Orchestra of the National University of the Arts (Orquesta de Tango de la UNA) in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 2024.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you use amplification?
Yes. I bring my own microphone and small amplifier if necessary (power outlets needed), depending on the size and acoustics of the venue.
What if my ceremony/party is outdoors?
I’m happy to perform outdoors! If rain or strong sunlight is expected, I’ll need some kind of covering to protect my instrument. Outdoor event can be absolutely beautiful, and I’m happy to be part of your special day.
What do you usually wear?
I usually wear black or a color.
If you have a specific dress code or color preference, I’m happy to coordinate with your event.
Do you require breaks?
For performances of two hours or longer, I typically take a short break between sets.
Will you attend the wedding rehearsal?
I don’t usually attend wedding rehearsals. We’ll discuss the music and timing in advance, and I’m very experienced with the flow and timing of wedding ceremonies.
Can I request a specific song?
Absolutely! I’m happy to discuss special song requests for your ceremony or event. Advance notice is appreciated, especially for songs that are not already in my repertoire.
Do you play completely solo without backing tracks?
Yes. I also offer solo flute without backing tracks for a more intimate and natural sound. This is especially beautiful for wedding ceremonies and other quiet, elegant settings.
Can you play both flute and piano?
Yes! I can play both instruments for your event. For example, I can perform elegant flute music during the ceremony and switch to piano for cocktails or party. I’m happy to customize the music to fit the atmosphere and flow of your event.
