About

My name is Sonny Iyasere, a cinematographer and video production specialist based in Carrollton, Tx. With over 8 years of experience in video production, photography, and creative consulting, I focus on capturing raw, authentic human emotion through my work. Whether it’s for a documentary, commercial, event, or narrative film, I strive to create content that resonates deeply with audiences.

My journey into visual storytelling started at Full Sail University, where I earned my degree in Cinematography. Since then, I’ve had the opportunity to work with diverse teams and create content that pushes boundaries. I’m passionate about showcasing the parts of humanity often overlooked, telling stories that truly connect with people.

Beyond just capturing beautiful images, I manage all aspects of production, from conceptualization to shooting and post-production. My style is all about detail and innovation, and I aim to create visuals that not only look great but leave a lasting emotional impact.

I’m also the founder of Happy Wolf Productions, a creative studio I built to produce high-quality films, music videos, documentaries, and commercials. Through Happy Wolf, I focus on telling stories that spark conversation, inspire change, and foster authentic connections.

Outside of work, I love collaborating with fellow creatives and continually learning and growing in my craft. I’m transitioning into full-time freelance work and am always looking for new opportunities to collaborate and connect with like-minded professionals in the industry.

Additional booking notes

When working with me, clients can expect a professional approach to both the creative and technical sides of video production. Below are the key technical elements and requirements that ensure a high-quality result for each project:

Cameras and Equipment
I use top-tier equipment to achieve cinematic, high-definition results:

Cameras:

Sony FX6 – Ideal for high-end video production, offering exceptional 4K image quality, excellent low-light performance, and superior autofocus.

Sony A7RIII – A versatile mirrorless camera with great image quality for both video and stills, perfect for capturing detail and high-resolution shots.

Lenses:

Meike 85mm lens – Great for close-ups, providing a sharp and cinematic look, with a pleasing bokeh effect for portraits and detail shots.

Sony 24-105mm G Series lens – A versatile lens for a wide range of shot compositions, from wide angles to tight close-ups.

Canon FD 35mm lens – Ideal for vintage-inspired shots, offering a distinctive look with character and softness, perfect for creating a unique cinematic style.

Lighting:

GVM lights – High-quality LED lighting that provides flexibility in both intensity and color temperature. These are great for achieving soft, flattering lighting for interviews, music videos, or dramatic scenes.

Soft box light – Used for diffusing light to create a soft, even glow on subjects, particularly in intimate or studio settings.

Flash:

A flash unit is available for capturing high-quality images in low-light environments, especially useful for events or on-the-go photography.

Sound and Audio
Good sound is key to a successful production, and I ensure that the audio quality matches the visual aspect of your project:

Microphones: I use a variety of professional microphones, including lavaliers for clear dialogue capture, shotgun mics for directional sound, and boom mics for flexibility in various environments.

Sound Mixer: Depending on the size of the project, I may use a dedicated sound technician to ensure optimal audio levels, clarity, and the capturing of ambient sounds.

Music: Original soundtracks and professional royalty-free music are available for integration into projects, as well as collaborating with composers for custom compositions when needed.

Lighting Requirements
Lighting is essential for achieving the right mood and atmosphere in your project. The following are the key elements I consider when designing the lighting setup:

Natural Lighting: For outdoor shoots or scenes where natural light plays a significant role, I prioritize working with the time of day to capture the best light. Golden hour and blue hour are key moments for cinematic shots.

Controlled Lighting: For studio setups, I use a combination of key lights, fill lights, and backlighting to create dimension and mood. GVM lights paired with softboxes allow for versatile setups, from dramatic low-key lighting to bright and even lighting for interviews or fashion shoots.

Modifiers: I use diffusers and reflectors to soften light and control shadows, creating a balanced and flattering look for subjects.

Staging and Set Requirements
For shoots with specific staging requirements, the following guidelines help create an optimal environment:

Location Scouting: I recommend scouting locations beforehand to assess natural lighting, space, and sound conditions. This ensures that the setting aligns with the desired mood and narrative.

Studio Setups: For controlled studio shoots, I work closely with clients to design the set. This can include backdrops, props, and furniture placement. Minimalist settings or elaborate sets are both within my scope, depending on the project.

Space Considerations: I require adequate space to move around freely, particularly for camera movements. This is important for tracking shots, dynamic camera angles, or action scenes.

Post-Production and Editing
In post-production, I provide the following technical details:

Editing Software: I use industry-standard software like Adobe Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve for editing, color grading, and visual effects. This allows for precise control over every aspect of the project, from transitions to color correction.

Color Grading: Each project is individually color-graded to ensure the final look matches the desired mood. I use a mixture of LUTs and custom grading to give each project a polished, cinematic appearance.

Visual Effects: I integrate visual effects as needed, whether it's for text overlays, motion graphics, or compositing. Adobe After Effects is used for advanced VFX and motion graphics.

Project Setup Requirements
For optimal efficiency during production, the following elements are needed:

Power Sources: Depending on the shoot location, reliable power sources must be available for cameras, lighting, and sound equipment. I typically bring portable power solutions for shoots in remote or outdoor locations.

Crew Size: The size of the crew varies depending on the scale of the project. For smaller shoots, I work with a lean, efficient team, while larger projects may involve additional crew members, including lighting technicians, sound engineers, and production assistants.

Wardrobe and Makeup: For fashion-related shoots or character-driven narratives, I suggest coordinating wardrobe and makeup ahead of time. I can provide basic direction for styling or collaborate with professional stylists and makeup artists to achieve a specific look.

Travel and Logistics
For out-of-town shoots or projects requiring travel, I ensure that logistics are handled efficiently. This includes:

Travel Arrangements: I coordinate travel details, including transportation for the crew and equipment, to ensure the shoot runs smoothly.

Permits and Legal: For outdoor shoots or locations requiring permits, I handle the paperwork and coordination with local authorities to ensure compliance with regulations.

Influences and inspiration

Influences

As a filmmaker and cinematographer, I’ve drawn inspiration from a wide range of artists and creatives whose works have shaped my approach to storytelling, cinematography, and the overall filmmaking process. These influences span across various genres and time periods, and include both legendary figures and contemporaries whose works continue to push boundaries.

Paul Thomas Anderson
Paul Thomas Anderson’s work has had a significant impact on my approach to visual storytelling. His films, such as There Will Be Blood and Boogie Nights, showcase a masterful balance of character-driven narratives and atmospheric visuals. Anderson's ability to draw deeply emotional performances from actors and his use of long, unbroken takes have inspired me to explore ways of allowing moments to breathe on screen, making the audience feel the weight of each scene. The raw, almost hauntingly intimate atmosphere he creates with his cinematography resonates deeply with my focus on capturing authentic, human emotion.

Spike Lee
Spike Lee’s bold and unapologetic storytelling style has profoundly influenced my work, especially in terms of social and cultural commentary. Films like Do the Right Thing and Malcolm X are not just visually captivating but also rich in powerful messages about race, identity, and societal issues. Lee’s unique use of color, camera angles, and sound all serve to enhance the emotional and intellectual depth of his stories. His unflinching exploration of controversial themes challenges me to think about the stories I tell and how I can use film as a platform for sparking conversation, reflection, and change.

Spike Jonze
Spike Jonze’s work, particularly Her and Being John Malkovich, has always inspired me with its blend of eccentricity, emotional complexity, and visual inventiveness. His ability to make the absurd feel deeply human, and his unconventional storytelling techniques, encourage me to think outside of the box when it comes to both narrative and form. The way Jonze uses sound and visuals to create a unique emotional landscape—like the poignant, dream-like sequences in Her—reminds me of the importance of experimenting with different styles to evoke feeling, and of the subtle power that lies in simplicity.

Other Influences

Alfonso Cuarón: Films like Children of Men and Roma have influenced my approach to cinematography. Cuarón’s long takes, seamless camera work, and ability to build tension through quiet, intimate moments are powerful techniques that I aim to master. His ability to create such rich, immersive worlds without overwhelming the viewer is something I admire and aspire to emulate.

David Fincher: The meticulous precision of Fincher's work, particularly in Se7en and Gone Girl, has shaped my understanding of how visual style can complement tone and narrative. His control over lighting, color palette, and pacing is a constant source of inspiration, especially in dark or atmospheric stories..

A24 Films: A more recent influence, A24 has become a beacon for innovative and daring films, from Moonlight to Lady Bird. The studio’s willingness to take risks on bold, original content that blends genre and real-world emotion has had a profound impact on my desire to take creative risks in my work.
