HAOPINAKA brings the spirit of aloha to the San Francisco Bay Area with Hawaiian guitars, ukuleles, and sweet vocal harmonies. Our beautiful and talented hula dancers are also available to make your special occasion memorable and unique.
The folks at Haopinaka were super responsive, flexible, and friendly, when we requested a quote for entertainment for our school fundraising event. They were very professional and had many different options available for us to choose from. We had requested the entertainment very last minute and they responded immediately and were very flexible on timing. The dancer that came to perform was extremely well prepared with a pre-set routine and playlist, music, costumes, and accessories. There was even audience participation included, which was great. She was also extremely patient as our schedule was running way behind and she adjusted the timing of her performance right on the spot. So thankful for all of your aloha, Haopinaka! I look forward to the next opportunity to work with you again! Mahalo nui loa!
Loved having you help me bring in my 30s with the true spirit of my home - Hawai’i. What a class act you both were. Beautiful music & excellent song.
I could not have asked for a better pair to entertain my 50 guests in a small party environment that made everyone feel right at home. Mahalo nui loa from the bottom of my heart.
Response from Haopinaka - Hawaiian Music and Dance:
Mahalo, thank you Brett! We really enjoyed playing at your birthday party. It was so fun playing requests from all the kama'ainas (Hawaiian locals), and we even got a couple of guests up to do the hula! I'm so glad we could help you celebrate in Hawaiian style.
Much aloha, Haopinaka

What to Expect
HAOPINAKA provides live Hawaiian music with hula dancers. We play a range of Hawaiian music from traditional hula classics to contemporary IZ songs. We perform as a full 7 piece band, a solo musician, and everything in between. We also can perform with our hula dancers, anything from a full Polynesian review with up to 10 dancers, to a solo dancer.
HAOPINAKA was formed in 1998 when three friends from different backgrounds came together to share their love of Hawaiian music. The name “HAOPINAKA” is a combination of the words HAO-le (white guy), PI-noy (Filipino guy), and ka-NAKA (Hawaiian guy). And it is this unique friendship of cultures and styles that creates the sweet and lively sound of HAOPINAKA.
Peter Garellick, our haole, plays Hawaiian steel guitar, ukulele and bass. He also performs with the country band Crying Time, and the Javanese Gamelan Ensemble Sari Raras. Sil Castillo, our pinoy, plays guitar and ukulele. He plays with Tennyson Lum and many other well known Hawaiian artists. Rod Valdez, our kanaka, plays bass, guitar, and ukulele. Hailing from Waianae, Oahu, Rod has been playing all his life with musicians in Hawaii and here on the mainland.
We often perform with the wonderful hula dancers of Hui Hula O Na Pu’u I Ka Noe, a Polynesian cultural dance group established in 1988 by kumu Kalena Gregory. They dance at Aloha festivals, ethnic dance festivals, parties, and lu'aus, and have won awards at dance competitions around the world, including China, Germany, and Poland.
HAOPINAKA is available to bring the sound, sights, and spirit of aloha to your next party, lu’au, wedding, or special event. We can perform as a solo musician, or all the way up to a full 7 piece band, and with or without hula dancers. Mahalo!
