Austin Yancey
CEC, CCE, PCEC
Principal, Executive Chef
Chef Austin Yancey took an interest in cooking at an early age, spending many hours in his grandmother's "southern style" kitchen. That Greenville, South Carolina home was where young Austin was first introduced to the concept of farm to table cooking, and his lifelong passion for food was born. After briefly attending the University of South Carolina studying biology, he moved to Chicago to pursue a career in culinary arts, enrolling at Le Cordon Bleu. Yancey took every opportunity outside of his normal classes to learn and experience more within the professional culinary world. In 2005, he had the chance to compete in the selection process for the Bocuse d'Or USA competition as an assistant to Chef Rick Gresh. The chef would become Yancey's coach and mentor, training him in competitive cooking as well as in the nuances of the restaurant industry.
Yancey's experience with the Bocuse d'Or fueled his drive and determination to succeed in the culinary field. Setting his sights on fine dining in early 2008, Yancey landed a job at Alinea, a Michelin 3-Star restaurant, working under Chef Grant Achatz. His time there would prove to be invaluable as he quickly learned the hard work and dedication that it takes to succeed in one of the world's top kitchens. The lessons and experiences from his time there would inspire and help to solidify the philosophies that had begun to define him as a professional.
While at Le Cordon Bleu, Chef Yancey organized and mentored the school's competitive cooking team. Under his instruction the team has earned numerous medals in culinary events and has become one of the most popular extracurricular clubs at Le Cordon Bleu – Chicago. In August of 2011, Chef Yancey founded Elite Personal Chefs, LLC, a company that provides Personal Chef, Private Events, and Corporate Culinary Services. In 2012, he received the Olson Communications "Chefs of Tomorrow Grant" and finished first in the 2012 "What's in your Wok?" National cooking competition sponsored by Riviana Foods, makers of Minute® Rice and other national brands.
Yancey holds an Associate's Degree in Applied Science in Culinary Arts as well as a Bachelors Degree in Culinary Management; both from Le Cordon Bleu. He also holds the designations of Certified Executive Chef, Certified Culinary Educator and Personal Certified Executive Chef from the American Culinary Federation. Chef Yancey was named "2012 Educator of the Year in Academic Leadership" for Career Education Corporation, one of the organizations highest honors. Along with educating his students, Chef Yancey continues to pursue competitive cooking opportunities and further ACF certification. In 2012, Chef Yancey was accepted into a Certified Master Chef training program spearheaded by CMC, WGMC Edward G. Leonard and sponsored by Le Cordon Bleu. That journey would take him around the country and even the world training and competing, earning many professional competition medals and accolades. In 2013, Chef Yancey traveled to Dubai, UAE and with his team earned a gold medal while representing the United States.
Having left Le Cordon Bleu in the summer of 2014, Chef Yancey joined the faculty at Kendall College where he continues his work as a culinary educator and mentor for students. As Executive Chef and owner of Elite Personal Chefs, Yancey uses his expert knowledge as a culinary professional and educator to delight his customers with impeccable service, elegant experiences and above all, good food.
