December 23, 2023Highly Recommend!! Wonderful Sound!
Dave is an incredible piano player and vocalist! He and his bassist played for our office holiday party. Tthey were awesome, and really added to the overall ambience of the event. I would hire him again in a heartbeat for any kind of event. He was super friendly and easy to work with, highly professional and can play anything. Showed up on time, and made things very easy on our end. All we had to do was provide access to a power outlet and Dave did the rest! Thank you so much Dave!!

December 3, 2023Dave’s the man
Dave played for our Holiday party on our grand piano. Dave was great! He was spontaneous, a real gentleman, and on time. He played all the guests requests and led us in singing the holiday favorites. We will use him again for future events.

Thanks Laura. I appreciate your taking the time to do such a nice review. During the two hours of requests I covered quite a wide range of music- much of it favorites from the 70's. Fur Elise (Beethoven), Birdland (Weather Report), Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis, Take Five (Brubeck),Karen Carpenter, Bread, Carol King, Scott Joplin, Rhapsody in Blue plus plenty of holiday songs. It was a very nice group of people with a wide range of musical interests.

We had a great time playing for your patrons. It was fun talking to them afterwards and answering their questions and hearing their stories about music.

Thank you Ali. I've never seen so many ugly sweaters in one place. I'm sorry mine was not that ugly. What a nice crowd of friends and family - they really sang nicely during the singalong and seemed to be moving to the music the rest of the night.

September 25, 2023Great wedding jazz como
Our family has hired Dave and his ensemble for two lifecycle events. He is a great listener to the client's needs and desires and adapts accordingly. Dave hires top notch musicians to accompany him. He modifies the volume to the size of the venue and the crowd. He creates fabulous playlists. He learned a particular song that was particularly meaningful to our family. The ensemble is prompt and professional. The combo has a fabulous, jazzy, rich and complex vibe. We highly recommend Dave Flippo.

What to expect
All my players are professionals, so they know how to act respectfully and appropriately. They are also all friendly and easy going and open to interacting with any guest that approach them during the breaks. We are sensitive to the appropriate volume for different parts of the evening... cocktail music may be brighter and more energetic and dinner music may be quieter, so people and conversation we had we had with the clients. The music will flow and give the listeners lots of variety of styles, grooves and tempos.
About
Dave Flippo, a native of Pittsburgh, PA, moved to Chicago in 1987 after completing a Masters and Doctorate in Music Composition/Piano at the Eastman School of Music and the University of Michigan.
From that time on, he has worked as both a teacher, solo pianist, and small ensemble leader. He has performed for numerous private events as both soloist and group leader for weddings, ceremonies, cocktail hours, concerts, graduations, and holiday parties and also performed with After Hours, a 7 seven-piece wedding band, for fifteen years.
Dave has also led his own artistic group “Jazz from Planet Flippo” (formerly Flippomusic) which features his own compositions and arrangements. He’s recorded six CD’s and received numerous positive reviews and awards with that group. Many of his arrangements of contemporary artists are added to his performances and include artists such as Lennon / McCartney, Joni Mitchel, David Bowie, Stevie Wonder, Radiohead, Amy Winehouse, KT Turnstal, Steely Dan, Sly Stone. This gives the audience some fun, exciting sounds that are still familiar. He is also an adjunct professor at Triton College and College of Lake County and teaches piano, jazz piano and composition in his home studio and nearby student homes.
Dave has built up a diverse repertoire and is comfortable in any style: jazz standards, contemporary, show tunes, classic rock/pop, classical and even Bollywood. He is an easy going and attentive person that is eager to craft his musical performance to fit the vision and preferences of his clients. He offers the option to add vocals to his solo piano performances and to his small ensembles. He can also add melodica (a harmonica-like instrument) to his performance, if desired.
Additional booking notes
SOLO: For solo piano performances, I will play a tuned piano that is provided. (The venue or client is usually required to pay for a tuning, if needed.) If no piano is provided, I will bring an 88 key electric piano, stand and amplifier. In either case, if vocals are desired, I will bring the necessary equiptment: mike, cords, mixer, amplifier on a stand or floor.
BAND:For ensembles, I will generally provide the PA system which includes a mixer with effects, cords and high quality microphones, cables and stands. There generally isn't much to ask of most venues except having enough space to set up and having electricity. If there are other instrumentalists, they will provide their own instruments and stands.

Influences and inspiration
Dave grew up on both sides of the fence, playing the pop music Billy Joel and Elton John by ear but also developing his piano technique with his classical studies - Chopin, Bach, Beethoven and others. He's also a professional jazz composer, vocalist and pianist so all of that blends together to allow him keep the music and arrangements spontaneous and fresh; different for every occasion and group. His jazz influences include great pianists like Keith Jarrett and Bill Evan and vocalists Frank Sinatra and Mel Torme.
Setup requirements
Basically Enough space for the instruments and speaker and electricity. It depends if it is solo piano or a trio or quartet. The dimensions will be discussed once that is decided.
