What to expect

You can expect and depend on us for fabulous costumes that fit right and make the huge visual impact you're seeking. We can usually custom design and build to fit your budget. That said, there's a world of difference, for example, between an historic or superhero costume that's $700, and one that's film quality at $6000 or more. The biggest, most important events are best served with incredibly detailed costumes that become heirloom quality items your family can enjoy for generations. We want you to come to us when something off-the-rack or mass manufactured just won't work. We auctioned off our rental costumes and props during covid, so we focus now almost exclusively on custom builds! We are new here on Gigsalad (as of March 24, 2023) so we welcome you to write nice reviews if you've ever worked with us. Our google business rating is five stars and we've been in this business for 30 years:)

About

Hi there! I've been a costume designer/technician- cutter/draper/patternmaker, tailor, alterations, fabrication & wardrobe tech since 1990. My team and I work a LOT for film, tv, commercial styling, wardrobe preproduction & custom-builds.

Our FAVE projects are always custom builds and tailoring for your historic, sci-fi and fantasy events. Themed weddings most welcome! Our shop also provides animation, editing and vfx services plus custom sets, props, miniatures and practical effects:)

Additional booking notes

When we design and build something custom for you, we schedule a time for you to come visit us so we can take complete measurements plus have you show us images you've collected- these can be film stills, drawings, illustrations, comic books, historical photographs, etc. We may also ask you look through reference books that we own here, so you can pinpoint and talk about specific details of a new costume, such as its sleeves, its neckline, its ornamentation, silhouette, shapes, draping, accessories, fabrics and more. We will be asking you questions about form as well as function, for example, will your new costume need to breakaway fast for quick changes? Does it need to transform? Will another costume be worn underneath it? Are you doing any stunts, fighting, flying, acrobatics or special effects filming while you wear the costume? If we are combining different visual details from several sources you're looking at, we will usually draw you a thumbnail sketch indicating how the finished costume will look and how all its parts fit together. Based on your measurements and the style of your costume, we can calculate the time needed to make it, plus fabric yardages needed for the project. You're welcome, then, to shop for those fabrics all by yourself, or we can do it, or we can combine forces to find exactly the right materials. We can create separate bids for materials and labor. We've found this to be very productive because many clients have hoarded fabric for years- someday dreaming of turning it into a magic garment. We are your engineers. Don't forget, book us early- custom work takes a lot of time plus we're frequently working on film, tv, commercial or corporate projects and we want to fit your project in, too!

Influences and inspiration

Our team admires so many of the top costume designers, production designers, filmmakers, etc.

Jen, our costume designer, really admires Colleen Atwood, Janty Yates, Ridley Scott, Alexandra Byrne, Chris Seagers, Dominic Watkins, Laura Ballinger and Ellen Mirojnick. She also admires many of Hollywood's classic-era designers and art directors.

Our production designer Hraefn (pronounced “Raven”- it’s Anglo Saxon), is a fine artist as well as a production artist. He has always been influenced by background paintings of the original, classic Disney films as well as Ralph McQuarrie’s Star Wars visions. Hraefn worked for nearly a decade in Los Angeles on sets, props, miniatures and special effects for lots of commercials and a bunch of films you know and love including Holes, Windtalkers, The Alamo and more.

Our master creator of props and special effects is Crit Killen. He's worked on films you love including Blade Runner, Titanic and Beettlejuice. Crit taught screenwriting at UCLA/USC and production design at BYU and has consulted on scripts of 90+ Hollywood feature films. His career spanning 34 years has given him the opportunity to work on some eighty-five motion pictures in production design and on another ninety some films behind the scenes, crafting stories and consulting on script and film structure. He knows good design when he sees it.

Around here, we love all artforms, including include music, plays, live performances and especially film. We spend a lot of 'water cooler' time talking about films. Our faves are always the ones in which the total design- all the sets, costumes, effects and the entire 'worlds' of the film(s) are presented in thoughtful, cohesive and well-fabricated ways, where nothing is left out and nothing is left to the imagination.
