Spirit of the Counting Crows Music

I had the pleasure of booking a truly exceptional performance by Tyler Stenson and the Black-Winged Birds. This Counting Crows tribute band embodies the soul and spirit of the iconic rock group with astonishing accuracy. From the moment they took the stage, it was clear that this was not just another tribute band. This was a homage, crafted with deep respect and a genuine passion for the original music.

Overall, The Black-winged Birds delivered an outstanding performance that was both a loving tribute and a testament to their own musical mastery. For fans of the Counting Crows, this is as close as you can get to the real thing without stepping back in time. For newcomers, it’s a perfect introduction to the heart and soul of a band that has captured so many hearts with their deeply honest and evocative music. If you get the chance, don't miss out—this is a show that truly honors the legacy of the Counting Crows in the most heartfelt way possible.

40th Birthday Surprise

I can't say enough good things about this band! The entire process from hiring them to performance was pure perfection. If you were to close your eyes and listen, you would think that it was Adam Duritz himself singing to you. I received compliments from everyone after the party for weeks on how amazing the band was. This was a surprise party but my husband told me Tyler was the easiest musician he has ever worked with and a wonderful person to do business with.

What to expect

Tyler Stenson and the Black-Winged Birds (8 world-class musicians) transport audiences back to the 90s and early 2000s, performing Counting Crows’ greatest hits like Mr. Jones, A Long December, Round Here, and more than 25 other influential songs from the era.

About

Having played his original music in Portland clubs since 2005, Portland singer-songwriter, Tyler Stenson, has compiled a “supergroup” of Portland musicians to form a Counting Crows Tribute — an homage to the cultish band that Stenson cites as his absolute biggest musical influence.

Stenson is not your typical cover artist. With twelve albums of original music to his name, his prolific writing has earned him the title of Portland’s “Songwriter of the Year” by the Portland Songwriters Association and “Best Male Artist” at the Portland Music Awards. Stenson has also been hand-picked by Adam Duritz (of Counting Crows) to perform at his Outlaw Roadshow showcase at SxSW and NYC (out of 4,000), as well as being selected by legendary producer, Don Was, as a “Top 10 Finalist” in Guitar Center’s National Songwriter Search (out of 10,000).

Stenson admits his love for the craft that has earned such recognition stems from one source.

“I remember a particularly whiskey-soaked night in college when my friend put on a Counting Crows record,” Stenson recalls. “I had heard their radio hits, but on that night I heard something deeper. My writing – my life – was never the same.”

For the next decade, Stenson has written a brand of lyric-first, folky pop-rock that draws from several influences, most obviously, Counting Crows. This original music has attracted a national following, including play on SiriusXM’s “Coffee House” station, several national commercials, and television series; however, with this tribute act, Stenson aims to step outside of his own box for a bit.

“When you’ve been on the road, writing and performing for as long as I have, from time to time, you need to remind yourself of why you’re doing it,” reflects Stenson. “Honestly, it's an equal thrill to put my originals on hold for a night and simply sing the songs that lit this fire inside of me.”

Tyler Stenson and the Black-Winged Birds transport audiences back to the 90s and early 2000s. Performing Counting Crows’ greatest hits like Mr. Jones, A Long December, Round Here, and many more.

###

Tyler Stenson is a native Portland singer-songwriter, locally recognized as the two-time “Songwriter of the Year” by the Portland Songwriters Association. His original music has earned honors such as “Top 10 Finalist” in Guitar Center’s National Songwriter Search (out of 10,000), a multi-song finalist in the International Songwriting Competition (ISC) and the opportunity to open for LeAnn Rimes, Chris Isaak, John Popper, Marc Cohn, Matisyahu, Allen Stone and more.
