Background & Training
Started young: First introduced to shakuhachi as a teenager by his father, began formal study in 2005 at age 25.
Teachers: Studied for 11 years with Bill Shozan Schultz. Since 2008, takes lessons with world-renowned sensei Kaoru Kakizakai, traveling to Japan and studying via Skype. Also studied with Kazushi Matama, Teruo Furuya, and Akikazu Nakamura of Kokusai Shakuhachi Kenshukan.
Craftsmanship: Rigorously studied shakuhachi making, developing partnerships with makers John Kaizan Neptune, Shingo Kimura, and Katashi Ishikawa. His goal is to craft shakuhachi traditionally as done in Japan.
