The Idea:
We know talking and educating folks isn’t enough to take down the epidemic of alcoholism and/or opioid addiction. We need to create space for people to become more vulnerable and not just in meetings. When you remain anonymous, your problem most likely grows. Why keep your problems close to the vest? I’ve shared with a lot of people now my past experiences with drinking and what happened. I am still standing. People still love me, and I feel heard and accepted.
We also want to use exercise and life coaching as a way for the alcoholic/drug addict to see the future regardless of their religious affiliation, criminal background or past. Never mind bad habits, because we will work together to change them. The idea is to take you out of your comfort zone. Through the power of exercise, you’ll boost endorphins and keep your cortisol levels low. Through coaching, you’ll start to see the benefit of your own self. You will want to share your story with more people and be less ashamed.
I do not believe I am the exception to the rule. I’ve endured a lot of pain and heartache throughout my life thus far, and I know there will be more where that came from. I am accepting of my past and cannot change what happened. I suppose some will call me a glorified AA sponsor, but that’s truly not the case. I am so much more than that, and I believe speaking up about what happened to me is healthy. Sure, telling my friends, family and therapist is one thing, but sharing it with normal people is another! They deserve to hear from us addicts and our sufferings. As I said, we never know who we’re reaching!
