Becoming a mariachi musician
Rodrigo Rodriguez is a classically trained musician based in Long Beach, California. While mariachi wasn’t his first musical endeavor, it quickly became a true passion. As the bandleader of Mariachi Romanza, Rodrigo has built a successful career performing for all kinds of events—from intimate gatherings to star-studded celebrations—sharing the rich tradition of mariachi music with heart, precision, and pride.
Early inspiration and influences
Rodrigo grew up in a musical family, but his personal love for music developed over time. “My dad was a pediatric surgeon, but he loved music so much that he hired a teacher to give lessons to my five sisters, my brother, and me,” he says. At first, Rodrigo played and practiced simply out of obligation, but around the age of 13, something clicked. He began to genuinely enjoy music and connect with it on his own. By the time he turned 18, he knew he wanted to pursue a career as a musician.
Classically trained, Rodrigo credits the music directors of past bands as his biggest influences. “I learned from their attitudes, knowledge, and social manners,” he explains. While playing guitar and accompanying singers in the Latin music scene, he found himself drawn more and more to mariachi. “Many of the songs in the repertoire came from the mariachi tradition, so I had to do research,” Rodrigo says. “The more I understood, the more I liked it. I definitely still have much to learn.”
Forming the band and making an impact
Mariachi Romanza began as a small ensemble, but after receiving many suggestions and requests from clients, the group expanded into a full mariachi. Since then, they’ve had the opportunity to perform at a wide range of events — from birthday parties and graduations to weddings and even grand celebrations hosted by renowned celebrities.
When we asked Rodrigo if he had a favorite performance, he had a hard time choosing. “Oh, I am so thankful for so many performances for so many reasons,” he says. “For the sake of being more concise, I would mention the time we played for ex-Governor Schwarzenegger at his house.”
That sense of gratitude shines through in how Rodrigo talks about the impact of their music. He’s especially honored to be part of meaningful family moments. “For instance,” he explains, “imagine we get invited to a 95th birthday, we play there, and then we get called back by a relative because the person passed away.” It’s that deep connection with people and families through music that keeps Rodrigo and Mariachi Romanza inspired and excited for the next gig.

GS: With many mariachis in the general Los Angeles area, how do you stand out from the competition?
RR: The advantage of this music business is that every voice is unique. We have videos available, and the client will judge if they like them or not. Besides that, you just have to fulfill what you promised, and you’re in business. Be formal, reliable, sincere, and honest.
GS: What advice would you say to someone starting a career as a musician?
RR: Practice a lot, but care about your audience. Do not live in a cloud where you believe that your beautiful music is going to save the world. Be gentle but firm with your audience. Again, care about people. If you do not want to do that, then be a musician who only plays in your own house-lounge.
