So let’s crank up the volume and discover what makes Austin Ellis the virtuoso he is in this month’s member spotlight!

Becoming a Singing Guitarist

Austin Ellis has always had a strong work ethic. He got his first job at the age of 13 with a special work permit and eventually took a job at a bank. He quickly realized that a regular nine-to-five may not be for him. During one of his shifts, he picked up a book from the lobby, “Rich Dad, Poor Dad” by Robert T. Kiyosaki, and was inspired to pursue his true passion, music.

So, at 18, he quit his job at the bank and started pursuing gigging full-time. He began participating in local open mic nights, and when a full-time musician took him under his wing, things started to take off.

His mentor saw potential. He helped him book gigs, play during his breaks, and sub for him if needed. These moments showed Austin what he already knew, that he had what it takes to be a full-time musician.

Shooting for the Stars

In 2014, Austin auditioned for the singing competition The Voice. He was selected to appear in season 6 and was chosen to be on Maroon 5’s own Adam Levine’s team. He was eliminated in the first battle round, but his life had already changed. His career began to take off, and he was introduced to GigSalad, where he has become one of our most successful members.

Austin’s GigSalad Journey

Austin joined GigSalad in 2014 and has mastered the art of online booking. In the following interview, he shares his tips and tricks for making the most of your GigSalad profile.

Booking made simple

GS: How has GS made the booking process easier for you? Are there any specific features or tools that you find particularly helpful?

AE: GigSalad is a game-changer because it puts the entire event business right in the hands of vendors. Whether they see themselves as a business or not, they are, so having an all-in-one tool to run the show is a total win.

The platform nails it, from top-notch SEO to a seamless user experience, considering both sides of the coin. The culture is something else — warm, special, and refreshing. Unlike those other booking agents, GigSalad feels more like a family than a cold transaction. In a world that can be icy, it’s a welcome dose of warmth.

Mastering media

GS: Can you share some tips and tricks for optimizing your GS profile? What strategies have you used to attract more clients and stand out in your market?

AE: One thing I think is overlooked is maximizing categories. I focus a lot on my categories. It’s important to spread as wide a net as you can. Even if the last few categories are a stretch, you want to get the most leads possible.

It’s also good to note that the sooner you can get on a call with a client, the better off you will be. Messaging and attempting to schedule a call instead of sending a quote on the first response is key. If you engage and speak with them, you can show them what’s unique about you and give yourself a chance to shine.

Finally, don’t be afraid to expand your market. If it’s worth it in your city, it’s probably worth it in the city next door. If you are starting out, understand that it doesn’t stop with your home city. Even if you’re adding drivable cities, it’s worth it. Leverage as much as you are willing to regarding cost and drive time.

Clear communication

GS: How do you engage with clients on GigSalad? Do you follow any communication strategies or best practices to ensure a positive experience?

AE: I would say if you can memorize all these songs, music, and setlists, then the same level of commitment needs to be applied to your sales techniques. People underestimate the power of the words you choose. The way you communicate your message should be engaging, and you should take the time to figure out the things that work. Keep it short and sweet, and tune up your language. When it comes to a phone call, don’t wing it. Create a script with a structure or a foundation, and be genuine but be prepared. Make sure you treat yourself as a business.

Stellar support

GS: What kind of support have you received from GS?

GigSalad support is awesome! I love you guys. GigSalad has always proven to be flexible and helpful and helped me take care of any mistakes.

Words of wisdom

GS: If you could give ONE piece of advice to someone considering joining GigSalad, what would it be?

Just do it, fam, do it. At least try. Be patient and give it time. Stick with it for six months to a year to ensure you see the full results. There is so much that GigSalad offers. Make sure you use everything available to you. Don’t be afraid to expand beyond your market and push the envelope with what’s possible. Another important aspect is to get your reviews up. Do whatever it takes to get more good reviews.

Memorable Moments

While Austin has made many memories in the ten years he has been gigging through GigSalad, one imparticular stands out.

“Last Thanksgiving, I performed at a pre-Thanksgiving bash I booked through GigSalad. I was torn about leaving my own festivities. But, oh boy, the venue was a desert mansion with Apple Store vibes — imagine a sunset arrival in the desert. The family hosting was beyond incredible. We laughed, performed, snapped pics, and shared a truly special night.

“Later, joking about the Super Bowl, they said, “No wife, no entry!” Fast forward to VIP treatment at a Phoenix concert with my wife — private suite and all. The next day, I rocked the performance back at their place. Inspired by the concert, they invited us to their lake house. I’ve worked for their friends; they’re like a second family now. In the life of a musician, where family time often takes a back seat, feeling welcomed is everything.”

We can’t forget to mention that Austin was also hired through GigSalad to perform at the same venue where he auditioned for The Voice, creating the perfect full-circle moment.
