My prior educational and work experiences qualify me to provide services as a costume researcher/historian. I am a recent graduate of Loyola Marymount University, with a history major and theatre minor. Currently, I am enrolled in the Theater Costume Production certificate program at Los Angeles City College where I will be taking Costuming for Theater this Fall. In Spring 2017, I took two courses related to costumes: Costume Periods and Styles, and Costuming on Set. The Costume Periods and Styles course was a costume history class covering costumes from pre-history through modern day. Costuming on Set taught the skills necessary to be a costumer on a film or television set.
This summer I interned for six weeks at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising (“FIDM”) Museum. I assisted the museum staff in mounting FIDM’s annual television costume exhibit, featuring actual costumes from television shows of the past year. I was very fortunate to have had the opportunity to help set up this exhibit, especially without having any prior museum and curatorial experience. I learned valuable information about the behind the scenes operation of a museum, including how to properly dress the mannequins in the costumes and to report on the conditions of the costumes to ensure that the costumes from the studios were returned in the same condition they were given to the museum. Additionally, I learned why the museum uses mannequins that are undecorated and do not have human skin tones, despite the race of the character or actor or how important race was to the story being portrayed in the television show. The goal of undecorated mannequins is to ensure that the mannequins blend into their backgrounds, which allows the costumes be the focus, rather than the mannequins themselves.
During the 2016-17 academic year, I was the assistant costume designer for the New Roads School Spectrum Drama Program. The drama program mounted a production of Sherlock's Last Case. In this position I was responsible for researching the costumes and costume props for each character and then pulling the appropriate costumes for each character at the costume shop. , Finally, from October 2016 through May 2017, I interned at a costume house, which carried vintage clothes from the 1800s through modern day. This has provided me with the opportunity to become familiar with a broad range of fashion.
