Overview

Caricature artist for all events, occasions, memories. Full color or black and white, 11 x 14. Latest gig: Atlanta Georgie Keystone Youth Corporate Event, July, 2024. Experience at parties, restaurants, downtown Greenville, and sold many individually, and do fundraisers as well. Groups or individuals; pen and chalk pastel. Vast collection of samples are displayed on my website and on facebook and instagram as Arthur Shain. I also have a new Youtube channel (arthurs america) in which I teach the art of caricature and do commentary. I work very well off photos and pics or live.

What to expect

Caricatures are in pen (pastel color only if there's more lag time, or maybe even an order), and take about 4-5mins. Early on, I worked primarily off of pics' and photos where subjects were able to have their picture taken (or submitting one to me), walk away, and come back to get it. Now, I do most drawings live. My approach is "Elton (or Taylor Swift) in concert" - that is, you get a great value because I arrive early and stay late, and can do a variety of styles, depending on what people want. I have drawn at events for as long as seven hours with a few short breaks. I can also do beautiful pastel color drawings on request.

I am accustomed to taking up money directly, via venmo, cash, or cash app. My work can easily be looked at on facebook (Arthur Shain) and instagram (Arthurs America).

About

I'm Arthur Shain, retired secondary teacher. No - I didn't teach art - but I used it as a tool to teach science for 28 years. My mother was an excellent artist, and I'm a chip off the block.

I was raised in "lil' O" Clemson, SC, where I played a lot of basketball, then went on to Erskine College on basketball scholarship, where I am now a member of the Hall of Fame.

I started drawing on the walls of my bedroom when I was five and to remedy this my Dad put sand in the paint and re-painted the room. Almost sixty years later my older brother in his last days remembered one pure memory of me when we very small: drawing - while he would "direct" me in what to draw. Later, I started seriously developing my craft in schools where I taught. In some places, I drew as many as one hundred students and teachers and administrators. I've performed at numerous events and parties and spent plenty of hours on the streets of Greenville, and have even taught a few caricature classes.

I am married and the father of four and have nine grandchildren.

Additional booking notes

Inside is ideal, but I can work outside, and have done so, a lot. I do require shade. I can work outside if the winds are not over 15 mph and it's not raining. I need reasonable light, but can work in dim conditions or add a floodlight if I have to. My spread area is quite small, around 4 x 5 feet square. A little more room is helpful to display more drawing samples.

Influences and inspiration

I trained under "Rowser" of Rowser's World, a caricaturist on YouTube. Also The Mad Art of Caricature (Mad Magazine artists). And much study of other artists.

Setup requirements

I bring my own easel and small table. Sometimes a floodlight is helpful if I'm in a very dim space indoors.
