My father’s memorial and celebration of life went well thanks to many, including Andrew. He was flexible and gracious when we needed him to stop. I enjoyed the singing asked for How Great Thou Are. Very professional service!

About
Andrew A. Hill is a freelance conductor and professional musician based in New York City. He holds a Masters of Music in Conducting from Colorado State University and a Bachelor of Music in Music Education and Trombone Performance from San José State University. While at San José State, he studied trombone with Tom Hornig, Kyle Covington, Timothy Owner, and members of the San Francisco Symphony. His postgraduate conducting mentors include Marin Alsop, Karen Ní Bhroin, Timothy Redmond, Professor Wes Kenney, and Dr. Rebecca Phillips. Originally from Lake Tahoe, California, Andrew was inspired to pursue music by his director Dean Nordby and studied bass trombone with Donald Glattly. From 2011 to 2022, he lived and worked professionally in the San Francisco Bay Area before relocating to New York City.
As a conductor, Andrew made his New York City debut with the New Conductors Orchestra, leading performances of David Diamond's Symphony No. 1 (1941) on February 11th and February 12th, 2023 and will return to the podium performing the U.S. Premiere of Robin Haigh's Concerto for Orchestra in February of 2026. In March 2025, he was selected from an international pool of applicants as one of eight conductors for the Rising Stars New York 2025 program hosted by And Other Duties, where he worked with Marin Alsop, Karen Ní Bhroin, and Timothy Redmond. That same year, he conducted and recorded with the FAMES Institute Orchestra in Skopje, North Macedonia, collaborating with composers from the Conservatorium van Amsterdam on new music for animated films. Recognized for his dynamic leadership, Andrew is featured in the book Learn Lead Lift, where he shares his approach to leadership and insights from his work as a music director.
As a professional trombonist, Andrew has performed in a wide range of settings—spanning orchestral, jazz, Broadway, salsa, and contemporary music. His performance venues include Carnegie Hall (NYC), Davies Symphony Hall (SF), Walt Disney Concert Hall (LA), Berliner Philharmonie (Berlin, Germany), Milan Conservatory (Milan, Italy), Teatro Nuovo Giovanni da Udine (Udine, Italy), The Royal Concertgebouw Hall (Amsterdam), Smetana Hall (Prague), Teatro El Círculo (Rosario, Argentina) and Teatro Colón (Buenos Aires, Argentina). He has played lead trombone on Post Hang! with the 7th St. Big Band and bass trombone on In Our Backyard (2019) with the Inner Circle Jazz Orchestra. As founder and co-leader of the Covenant Brass Sextet, he commissioned new works by living composers and led the ensemble on tours across California. He has also performed with the Santa Cruz Symphony and was the bass trombonist for the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra (2012–2015), joining their 10th International European tour. The orchestra’s performance of Mahler’s Symphony No. 5 was voted “Best Orchestral Performance” by San Francisco Classical Voice readers in May 2015.
From 2018 to 2022, Andrew served as Director of Bands, Orchestras, and Jazz at Los Gatos High School where he was named Educator of the Year (2021–2022). Under his leadership, the music program expanded significantly, adding faculty positions and initiating combined performances of orchestra, choir, and band. He led three domestic jazz ensemble tours and developed a comprehensive program recognized for its artistic growth and collaboration. Andrew’s earlier teaching experience includes roles as Elementary Band Instructor for Booksin Elementary through Arts Initiatives (2015–2017), Brass Instructor for San José Jazz Progressions (2015–2017), and positions within the Saratoga Union and Los Altos School Districts (2017–2018). He was also the founding conductor of the Santa Clara Vanguard Youth Brass Ensemble, helping to establish the Community Arts Programs for Vanguard Music and Performing Arts (2015–2018). Today, Andrew maintains an active freelance career as a conductor and professional musician across New York City, performing and collaborating across multiple musical genres.
