Andrew Chukwuka Egbuchiem is an award-winning countertenor recognized for the richness of his tone, expressive artistry, and compelling interpretations across Baroque opera, early music, art song, and concert repertoire. Rooted in the classical tradition while drawing upon his Nigerian heritage, his work increasingly explores the meeting point between European classical music, African art music, spirituals, and works by composers of the African diaspora.
Egbuchiem's early artistic development included participation in the 2012 Karlovo International Opera Singing Competition in Bulgaria, where masterclasses with Yossi Guerdjikov in Baroque music and Prof. Dragomir Nenov in drama and interpretation helped shape his approach to performance. From 2013 to 2014, he served as an artist-in-residence with the Singers of United Land Project, touring throughout the eastern United States, Kenya, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Poland, and Latvia.
He made his operatic debut with Brooklyn Opera Works in 2016 as the Sorceress in Purcell's Dido and Aeneas under Lina Tetriani and subsequently participated in the Amherst Early Music Festival's production of Cavalli's Erismena. He later performed the title role in Handel's Silla with Chicago Summer Opera and Oberto in Alter Echo Chamber Opera's Alcina Revamped. From 2018 to 2022, he was a regular soloist with the Brooklyn Philharmonia Chorus, appearing in works by Bernstein, Britten, Pergolesi, Charpentier, and Handel.
As a recitalist and concert artist, Egbuchiem has performed across the United States, Europe, and Africa. In June 2023, he appeared at Carnegie Hall's Laureates Gala with the New York Chamber Orchestra. His 2026 Midwest recital tour brought programs combining Baroque repertoire, art song, spirituals, and African art music to audiences in community-centered venues across the United States.
A passionate advocate for underrepresented repertoire, Egbuchiem released his debut album, The African Serenades (Centaur Records, 2022), reflecting his commitment to the performance and preservation of African art music and to expanding the repertoire heard on the classical concert stage.
His honors include the 2025 Voice Category Prize of the Utah Philharmonic Orchestra Concerto Competition; First Place, Countertenor, at the 2021 Kings Peak International Music Competition; the Audience Favorite Award at the 2020 World Bach Competition presented by the Boulder Bach Festival; Second Place in The American Prize in Vocal Performance, Art Song and Oratorio; and First Prize at the 2018 IMKA Music Competition. He was also named a Laureate Artist through the 2023 Carnegie Gala Auditions presented by Sound Espressivo and Progressive Musicians.
Through performance, recording, and thoughtfully curated recital programs, Egbuchiem continues to bring established and underrepresented musical traditions into conversation, expanding both the repertoire and the stories represented by the countertenor voice.

Technical requirements vary depending on the size and type of engagement.

For most recitals and intimate performances, Andrew performs acoustically and does not require amplification. A well-maintained acoustic piano is preferred when piano accompaniment is required; a professional-quality digital keyboard may also be used when a piano is unavailable.

The presenter should provide a clean, safe, adequately lit performance area with sufficient space for the singer and accompanying musician(s), as well as appropriate seating and music stands when required.

For larger venues or events requiring amplification, a suitable vocal microphone and sound system should be provided by the venue, with adequate time for a sound check before the performance.

For performances with organ, harpsichord, chamber ensemble, period instruments, or orchestra, technical and rehearsal requirements will be discussed with the presenter in advance.

A private and secure changing/warm-up area and access to drinking water are appreciated. Specific requirements can be adjusted according to the venue and nature of the engagement.
