About
André Portis is a multi-genre vocalist from Fayetteville, North Carolina, currently pursuing a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where he studies under acclaimed mezzo-soprano Phyllis Pancella.
André’s musical journey began in the church, where he discovered his love for singing through choir and praise & worship ministry from a young age. Influenced by his musical family and inspired by the wide variety of music surrounding him, his passion for performance and storytelling through music continued to grow.
Throughout high school, André was actively involved in prestigious ensemble programs, including the Cumberland County Schools All-County Chorus (2020–2024), the NCMEA Honors Chorus (2023), and the North Carolina All-State Chorus (2022, 2024). He also earned Superior Ratings in Musical Performance Adjudication solo competitions from 2022–2024.
During his studies at UNCSA, André has continued expanding his artistry through opera, concert work, musical theatre, and collaborative performance. His operatic and theatrical credits include The Trial at Rouen by Norman Dello Joio, Die Fledermaus by Johann Strauss II, The Impresario by Mozart, Idomeneo by Mozart, Monsieur et Madame Denis by Offenbach, and Médée by Darius Milhaud. He has also performed in the UNCSA Drama production of Choir Boy by Tarell Alvin McCraney.
In addition to his stage work, André has performed with Piedmont Opera and the A.J. Fletcher Opera Institute under the direction of Dr. Steven LaCosse and James Allbritten. He has also received recognition in NATS competitions, earning placements in both Commercial Music and Hall Johnson Spiritual categories.
As a developing young artist, André is passionate about bridging the worlds of classical music and musical theatre while embracing opportunities across multiple genres. Through every performance, he strives to connect with audiences through authenticity, expression, and heartfelt artistry.
