Hey there! My name is AC Bennett and I’m a youth speaker and standup comedian. I grew up in Northport, Long Island with my siblings and parents. For all intensive purposes I had a pretty normal life. I did school plays and hung out with friends. I ate bagel bites after school and wore too much eyeliner. As I got older, it became pretty challenging for me to determine falsehoods from reality. I couldn’t tell up from down and I began to spiral into a pattern of self-hate and constant fear of rejection.
I grappled with my issues along with the loss of my sister and found myself seeking help in all the wrong places. My story is about acceptance, love, fear, anxiety, and passion. More than anything else, it’s about forgiveness. How we can learn to forgive those who’ve hurt us, but more importantly how we can learn to forgive ourselves? My story is not rare and it’s not surprising. And that’s what makes it so important. The current generation of young people are dealing with issues amplified by loud speakers everywhere they go, and it’s time we step up and acknowledge the under-lying issues.
While it’s certainly important, there’s more to growing up than “making good choices”. I learned that the hard way when I landed in treatment after years of mental and physical starvation. I’m here to bring you a reality check, one you can’t just “click, like, subscribe, or share”.
