Overview

My repertoire ranges from Classical to Pop - Bach, Beatles, Spanish music, Bossa Nova, Jazz standards. I record for the Centaur CD label. I've played concerts all over the U.S. and Europe, and have three decades experience playing major events in New York City: steady engagements at Windows On The World, The Palm Court at The Plaza Hotel, The Mark Hotel, and The InterContinental/The Barclay. I've appeared at the White House, twice, 1997 and 1999, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art for many years. I'm also an author: "Waking the Spirit: A Musician's Journey Healing Body, Mind, and Soul" (Macmillan:Picador, 2016).

Monique, it was a great party from beginning to end! Clearly Michele is much loved by all her friends and family and that was a great idea you had, for me to play the accompaniment to the Beatles "Michelle" with everyone having the lyrics already printed out by you. Thank you so much for thinking of me and this review!

Andrew responded promptly to a late-in-the-day request for a classical guitarist and provided wonderful background classical guitar for our cocktail hour pre-wedding. Our guests thought he was terrific!

What a great day - a love wedding at the Boathouse in Central Park in New York, perfect weather on a patio in late September before the leaves have started to turn, the guests were a real music loving group of people , and a lovely wedding couple.

The guitarist rates it a five-star wedding!!!

My husband and I had the pleasure of featuring a concert by Andrew Schulman at our home for our 40th wedding anniversary party. We are so happy we chose him. Our guests were delighted with his diverse repertoire, his virtuosity, and his informative leads in to the pieces. Not only is his music wonderful to experience, but he also is a mature man with a sense of humor and humility who knows how to make all feel welcome. He was punctual and had good, timely communication with us prior to the event. Don't hesitate to engage him for a concert in your home. We were also pleased with our entire experience with this booking site, too.

What to expect

I play a wide ranging repertoire that delights the ear. I've been a professional musician in New York City since 1975, playing at many of the best know venues in the NY for a very demanding audience and I know how to present myself in a way that is worry free for the client and makes for a great event for the audience. I love my work.

About

Andrew Schulman is a guitar soloist and the founder and music director of the Abaca String Band, a string quintet. As a soloist he has appeared throughout the United States and Europe in venues ranging from Carnegie Recital Hall and The Improv in New York City to the Royal Albert Hall in London. He has had steady engagements in landmark New York City venues including Windows On The World, The Palm Court at The Plaza Hotel, The Mark Hotel, and the InterContinental/The Barclay.

Mr. Schulman performed at The White House, as a soloist in 1997 and with the Abaca String Band in 1999. He provided the music for special events at the Metropolitan Museum of Art from (phone number hidden)4, and has appeared at many other well-known institutions. The Abaca String Band appeared on the Carnegie Hall Neighborhood Concert Series from (phone number hidden)5 and in concert in 37 states throughout the U.S.

After his life was saved at Beth Israel Medical Center in July 2009 he became the resident musician in the Surgical ICU, which he continues to do. WNBC’s news story "A Gift of Healing" won a 2011 NY Emmy award and 1st Prize in the National Press Photographers Association "Best in PhotoJournalism" competition.

He has written a book, "Waking the Spirit: A Musicians Journey Healing Body, Mind, and Soul" (Macmillan:Picador, 2016). A film by Academy Award nominated director Josh Aronson, "Andrew & Wendy", has been aired multiple times on PBS-TV.

Mr. Schulman has recorded two solo CDs for the Centaur label, "The Baroque Style", and "Lullabies, Reveilles, (and Siesta!)", and his original music and arrangements are published by Berben Edizioni Musicali of Italy.

Additional booking notes

What I do is easy to arrange for. I bring my own sound equipment, a small but powerful Acoustic Image amplifier that can give just the right boost for a small party or fill a large area with a big crowd. The amp can also connect to a house system. Other than that I just need a chair or bar stool and I'm good to go. Lighting is up to the venue.

Influences and inspiration

I had the privilege and honor to have played several times, including a private lesson, for the legendary Spanish guitarist, Andres Segovia, and that had a great and positive influence on my career as a musician. Over the past three decades I've also had the opportunity to work with many superb professional musicians in New York.

Testimonials

Andrew & Wendy, You both did such an awesome job. Wendy, your performance was fantastic! You really started the official part of the program on the right note (if you’ll forgive the pun!). From my vantage point, all eyes were glued on you and “Beautiful Eyes” really set the mood! Thank you!!! Andrew, the Abaca Strings carried out what I think may the best “show band” performance to date, due in large part to your leadership. There were moments when I was speechless because the beauty of your songs pulled me in and distracted me momentarily. It was just so good I had to stop and listen. Wow!! It was honestly my pleasure to work with you. My only regret is not being able to meet all the members of Abaca Strings. Please pass my comments along to them. Simply outstanding!! Thank you very much! Have a great holiday season and let me know if you are ever performing in my area. Best regards, Rich

Dear Andrew, This year has been a popular one for Membership Special Events. The ABACA String Band was a strong force in making our receptions exciting and successful, for the ninth year in a row. Your efforts to have the music coincide with the exhibition preview have not gone unnoticed by our guests, and are appreciated. Your choices are always scholarly, lively, and varied. Of course, applause during a reception speaks for itself, but when I get requests for your name, address and phone number, I know I have a winner. I was happy to learn that you are continuing your association with Carnegie Hall. I am still proud that your "audition" was a performance at a Membership reception! You are a joy to work with, and because you are so thorough and professional, I don't worry about a thing. I also know that for each event I am getting the best musicians available in New York City. I look forward to the start of our 2000-2001 season, in September!
