Overview

I play and sing traditional bluegrass and old time music with the fiddle and banjo. This music is great for a concert or for a dance, and also works well as background music. I am an award-winning fiddler and banjo player with many years' experience in different styles of traditional American music. The music I play is lively and fun and people enjoy it regardless of whether they've heard it before or not. It's a familiar sound that hearkens back to simpler times.

I can also play classical violin if desired.

Enjoyed by our community

Aaron Jonah Lewis was hired for an event at a retirement community. He was easy to work and communicate with. He arrived early to set up and be ready for our residents. It was nice to have a variety of both instrumental pieces and a few pieces he also sang on. It was something different than our usual Friday afternoon entertainment, but residents enjoyed it and complimented his skill. We will be having him back sometime in the future!

Wonderful, quick visit over Zoom for a toddler's birthday!

I recommend corresponding/chatting with Aaron about your brainstorms, because he is open-minded and flexible. We worked out a short 15 minute visit as a live 'singing telegram'. (He can also pre-record a telegram if that is preferred.) His performance added warmth and delight!

What to expect

I can put on a show or play in the background. Either way I will play a variety of tunes on the fiddle and banjo and if it's appropriate I may sing a few traditional songs as well. If I am playing a concert I will tell some stories about the songs I'm playing. People often respond to my music by whooping and hollering.

About

Aaron Jonah Lewis is a multi-instrumentalist, performer and educator. He has won awards at the Clifftop Appalachian String Band Festival, including First Place Neotraditional Band in 2008 and 2015, and at the Galax Old Fiddlers Convention, including First Place Bluegrass Fiddle in 2007, and he has performed at major festivals from the US to the UK and from Italy to Finland.

Lewis has appeared on dozens of recordings from bluegrass and old time to swing jazz, modern experimental and Turkish classical music projects. He has taught workshops at the the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow and at the English Folk Dance and Song Society in London. He also plays and teaches banjo, mandolin, guitar, and bass and is currently based in Detroit.

Additional booking notes

All I need is a chair and a place to play. I prefer to play acoustic but if required I can amplify. No particular requirements for lighting or staging, just let me know what the room will be like and we can figure it out from there.
